I'm going to conduct an experiment, in which I state "Hi everyone, I'm a guy gamer" every time I play anything online. I want to see what responses I garner.

My guess would be either silent ignorance or "Who gives a gooseberry fool". Then again that's probably going to be the response with pretty much anything anyone says :fp:

Or they'll mishear it as "gay gamer" and you'll be berated with "lol ******" comments.

Who said you'd be immune to criticism?

I'm saying if I play an FPS with a group entirely made up of girls, no-one is going to call me fat, gay or a slag. You are less likely to be hurled with abuse, not "criticism"

you say potato, i say potato.

In my experience, women do very little but bitch about each other anyway. So you're just swapping one form of abuse for another.

Maybe the form of abuse suits you better, but it doesn't really solve the fundamental problem, which is that people are assholes.

I'd say you fell out with the other all girl clan members they would probably be more scathing, bitchy and vitriolic than any bloke could be. Just look at womens football for example, strawberry float messing with them. :slol:

This may not be workable, but I had an idea about putting an in game bounty on players who have proven to be abusive. Getting more xp/ loot/whatever for killing these players. The worse their behavior the higher the bounty. Eventually, they'll be forced to clean their act up or be be hounded out of the game, with literally everyone on the server trying to kill them. And Microsoft/Sony/whoever won't have to ban paying customers.

It seems odd that "girl gamers" feel they need to group together under a banner in order to be treated like every anonymous bloke. Bit of contradiction to claim you want equal footing but start by telling everyone you're different?

Everyone I know has been abused on Xbox Live, there are also options to mute and block people, they're easily accessible. There's even private party chats if you only want to talk with friends. People are assholes, especially in competition - that's a much wider problem than complaining to Microsoft can solve.

It may interest you to know that Ultima Online features such a system.

I can't say that it noticably reduced the number of assholes.

No different to the slagging matches between the UK and American players after each game or some foreign player getting racial abused.

Give people means to communicate and there will always be strawberry floating idiots not far behind!

PLAY | Persona 3 Reloaded [3h]
WATCH | Ted Lasso S3, HiJack S1, Red Dwarf S4, Dexter S2
RACE | Chew Valley 10k (June), GNR (Sept), Cardiff Half (Oct)

A particuarly good example would be Day Z, which has errupted in country to country warfare.

But on sexual harassment (which the article is about) this is something I will never experience playing with a group of girls. No-one is saying verbal abuse is exclusively for female players, I imagine everyone gets called gay, ******, etc, not "I hope your boyfriend beats you. Nah, you can't get a boyfriend" - that's clearly one for girls.

I only listened to this for the first time yesterday and couldn't get very far in. Does anyone really think the stuff he is saying, about her smell, her bra size, he would actually be saying if he was playing against a guy? This is why I would defend girls who choose to group together to play games. It's not that they want to be segregated, but if getting talked to like that is common and there's a simple way to avoid it, by playing with a group of people who won't call you a whore, then why on earth shouldn't you do that?

As far as I've experienced, it's usually men acting like dicks that draw the attention to women playing games. But it irks me when women are seen as 'guilty' of drawing attention to themselves simply by being women. (Although your comment does remind me of an awful video posted here a while back, where a group of girl gamers decided to preach to the masses on equality, which had a horrid 'look at me, listen to me, because I'm a woman' vibe)

Everyone would like to be treated normally, none of the girls in the article are singing and dancing about their gender, like anyone else they're playing a game, but because people have cottoned on that they're female, the verbal abuse becomes all about their gender. It isn't like every woman who plays a game has a stamp saying "I'M A GIRL GAMER AND I'M PROUD", (or even that every girl playing a game groups up with other girls, I'd guess that most don't) it's that they play a game, speak into their mic, and that is seen as an invitation to send rape threats, be called fat, ugly and so on.

To be honest if I could just be called a ****** like everyone else, it'd feel like a lesser evil

Paging Gario.

But seriously, don't expect me to white knight on this. This isn't something that can be fixed with a mandate from MS. This goes right down to the Internet Fuckwad theory.

And I expect gay people would rather hear the sexist comments than the homophobic abuse they get.

People online (especially Xbox Live) are assholes. Unless I know the person I am playing with, I mute the sound and put the radio on. There are only so many times I can hear 11 year old American boys shouting "******".

Wow. Just... wow. Yet again the term 'white knighting' gets rolled out as a substitute for "not acting in a completely reprehensible manner. Gotta love Internet forum-speak.

And "guys being guys"? So you're grouping me in with a bunch of abusively racist, sexist, morons with no respect for anyone they play with? Why on earth are they acceptable characteristics of "being a guy"?

Buy yourself a clue, Turnip.

For any given section of the population, a certain proportion will be complete shitheads. Until that changes, deal with it.

And that'll never change when acts of abuse and harassment are justified beneath the banner of how young men are expected to act. So how about a little less unmitigated defence of the 'fuckwads' on your part please. Deal with it.
