I wondered why you came into a topic about a PC and PS4 game to mention a different game.

I think i explained why...

The developer behind free-to-play zombie MMO H1Z1 has vowed not to sell important items such as guns, ammo, food or water.

John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment, outlined the game's micro-transaction policy on the H1Z1 sub-Reddit.

You'll be able to buy wearables because it's a "good, fair revenue generator" Smedley said. However, you'll still be able to find and craft items.

"We've also come up with a pretty awesome idea to let players who kill other players loot stuff," he explained.

"So if a player has a black ski mask and gets killed by another player, that player can wear the ski mask for a few deaths." H1Z1 features item durability - wearables you buy won't degrade, but when you loot something it will.

"Please note the original player always keeps their SC purchased wearables," Smedley said. "This gives the great feeling of whacking some unsuspecting fool who decided to bring a knife to a gun fight."

Smedley was clear on what will not be sold: guns, ammo, food and water. "That's kind of the whole game and it would suck in our opinion if we did that," he insisted, before adding the game will not sell boosts that impact those items, either.

Emote packs will be sold. "We felt like this is another good and fair revenue generator." And so will character slots. "Feels reasonable."

Additionally, you can find crates in the game, which are filled with "random cool stuff from the store".

"We're considering letting you see what's in them before you buy a key (ala Dota 2.). This idea isn't fully locked yet."

Smedley said Sony Online Entertainment was using things like the monetisation thread on the H1Z1 sub-Reddit to help it "steer clear of the stuff you just don't want to see".

I'm no fan of f2p but I think they way he has said they will be doing it is the best way, pay for the cosmetic stuff.

H1Z1 update on Eurogamer. OP updated with E3 demo footage.

E3 demo:

Eurogamer article:

Chopping down trees and crafting bows in H1Z1

Sony Online Entertainment has released a gameplay demo of H1Z1, its post-apocalyptic MMO survival game.

In the demo game designer Jimmy Whisenhunt takes us through crafting, driving, combat and the game's 24 hour day/night cycle.

H1Z1 drops players in the woods with a flashlight and little else, and tasks them with surviving the open world as well as zombies.

With an axe Whisenhunt chops down a tree, then uses the game's Discover crafting system to learn the recipe for making a bow as well as arrows.

H1Z1 has vehicles, which are often in a state of disrepair. You need to craft more items to fix them up. You can also build a property - eventually.

Elsewhere, we see the 24 hour day/night cycle, how the weather and the night affect gameplay, and shooting zombies in the head.

H1Z1 is coming soon to Steam as an Early Access title. There's a PlayStation 4 version planned but it will be released after the PC version.

In fairness, I've just finished Sim Lumberjack, so I'm ready for something new in that area.

The PS4 needs more games like this, I think. Mind you, it has 2 (?) MMO games out for it already, but this one sounds far more appealing.

I think I'm over these 'open world zombie apocalypse' games now. None of them really worked out for me, what with one thing or another. None of them nailed it and all were ultimately ruined by their online component (as in 'other players'). All devolved relatively quickly into idiotic sniper/robbing/murder sims. In the end, even the zombies became an incidental irrelevance - of no purpose whatsoever to the people playing the games. Just watch any of, say, Frankie's DayZ videos. Entertaining, sure, but the zombies are nothing more than background detail.

H1Z1 doesn't look as if it will buck the trend. :|

Roll on Daylight. A good, honest SP zombie apocalypse game and probably my last, best hope for the kind of zombie apocalypse game I'm still looking for.

One of the few games I've still got active on my Steam account. It's probably the best of a motley bunch, for me - and it does do a nice line in 'lone wolfing'. But the visuals? Ugh! The game is ugly beyond words; all the more shocking for it being built with CryEngine technology. Utterly baffling. SoD is a good idea done badly - a sadly recurring theme with these open world zombie games.

Here's hoping Daylight, when it finally arrives, isn't yet another disappointment.

I watched some twitch vids on this yesterday and it looked a bit rubbish to me. Also they were basically just discussing the amount of bugs it has, this is though early access and so really shouldn't have reviews etc as it's not finished. This is the problem with early access though as some people don't get it.

This seems like an absolute clusterfuck. Like Evolve, if you have to wade into the community to launch massive damage control posts defending the gooseberry fool you're pulling, you've strawberry floated up.
