Hades - Escaping Hell - first video game to win a Hugo Award!

Found the thread. Bumpty bump. Loving it. I've now beaten it twice, both times with the spear. On regular and then on Skull+1. I've not been able to do it with any other weapon yet, although I've kind of jumped the gun and been doing the other weapons on Skull+1 too to try and get more Blood drops from the Fury sisters. I recon if I did my playthrough right I could probably do it with each weapon on normal mode.

Also I want more fish.

Also, I'm really unsure about who i should be giving nectar too now I have all gifts back. So I'm just giving it out willy nilly.

Almost done this with every weapon now, just the shield left and halfway through a playthrough (bloody work). I have the power to turn the shield into a flying spikey disc trap which has made it SO much better than the stupid captain america lob and catch. I also have just been upgrading dementer's lazer beams again, and have a fair whack of HP on this run, I think I'll do it quite easily, then I'll be onto the Heat+1 run throughs, except for spear, I have already done it with spear.

Pairing the frisbee with Zeus's Thunder Flourish, and stacking that with Heaven's Vengeance and Static Discharge in particular is so good.

Glad more people are enjoying this game. It's a cracking title.

I buy any game that Tomous tells me to.

Been playing a lot of this and the last couple of runs have just... clicked I guess? I think I have a more rhythmic grasp of the combat so I can get through areas taking a lot less damage. I've also been getting more of a grasp of the different boons and seeing which ones actually complement the ways I play. I can now pretty confidently get through to Elysium now, but beating the final boss is out of my reach for now, but I'm just grinding for purple stuff and keys to unlock more abilities.

You'll get him soon enough. I actually think the Elysium boss (bosses!) are harder than the final one. That's maybe just me.

I agree! Or if not actually harder, a more difficult hurdle to progression. Hades is definitely tough but you'll get there soon enough!

Yep, I reckon Elysium can be the hardest part in the game, with the respawning enemies and the two bosses. Though the fourth area is annoying due to poison.

For the Elysium bosse, go for the Minotaur first. You want to get a good God Gauge power (I like the Artemis one). Make sure you have a full gauge when you get Theseus down to half health.

The first phase isn't too hard if you just take it slow and hit him in the back after his attacks.use the pillars for cover from his spear if he throws it, or days away if it's the spin.

Then when he is going into his second phase, hit him with it as soon as he's vulnerable. If you have a strong enough power, you'll kill him before he even starts the phase properly.

So apparently I'm on just short of 40 runs, and I think I'll be in the vicinity of threatening the ending in about 10 more runs.

No idea how that places me in general, I've seen people online saying they escaped in less than 15 runs which seems utterly ridiculous to me. That said, I've never played a roguelike before, and the first 15 or so runs were probably complete wastes as I got to grips with the system. The next 10 or so was me trying to somewhat focus what I was doing and actually using my head in terms of boons etc so I'd say the last ten runs were the first 10 where I was actually intelligently playing the system which probably explains why I did so much better. So I reckon another 10 should have me in a position to be a threat, especially as I'll only need one, maybe two more purple grinds to unlock the third life, and then I can really focus on boons.

The fact you've never played a roguelike before and seem to be having fun with it, makes me want to try this. Get the impression if you're not familiar with roguelikes, it's built-in accessibility mode is you can grind your way through it and it will take you more goes making it more time consuming than difficult?

I've played vampire survivors and enjoyed that. Still not sure if I'll enjoy but tempted to pick this up when it's reduced.

I think this is the "best one of these" by miles, and I don't think i'm alone with this view.

Everything blends together so perfectly.

Yea, I've found it really addictive and a smooth difficulty curve. I've usually found *just* enough challenge and balance of good runs versus crap ones to start to spot patterns in boons and tactics etc fairly organically. It's not very hand-holdy but it's also not obtuse when you want to review and revise your progress.

I'd highly recommend it for sure.

I’ve had about 30 runs and the best I’ve gotten is taking Meg (whom I presume is the first boss) down to about half health.

I stopped competing with you in games in about 2006 when I had free access to unlimited games at work and you still had a higher gamerscore than me.

I checked last night, my first completion was on attempt 29.

Itnerestingly I didn't beat Meg until attempt 6,but then attempt 7 I got to Elysium! Stomped the bone hydra and his level the first time I saw them!
