That section was always horrible but there is so much more to the game.

The worst part of HL2 was the activation. I will never forget the absolute ball ache it was.

For real dog? Calling the 9800 pro gooseberry fool tier?? That card was straight ballin for years. I got an X800 pro I think in 2005, but by then my aging Athlon 64 that only supported AGP was obsolete.
But yeah that activation, jesus. First ever game launch that required server authentication like that, Steam took for strawberry floating EVER to get it working. I think I only used steam once after that to buy day of Defeat Source or Sin Episodes and avoided it like the plague until it became the amazing storefront it is today around 2007/8 or so

 I loved my 9800 XT, I was genuinely sad when it died, I could have cooked food on the heat sink it ran so hot. 65 at idle ramping up to 95 at load.

It took 7 hours for me to get the game authenticated, after that though I didn't sleep all night as I played the game. I was so tired when I got in to work the next day. Ravenholm scared the gooseberry fool out of me when that started as I was playing in the dark with headphones on.

ATI's temps didn't improve as my card ran similar temps. I looked it up and that was normal.

It was just before cards became stupid massive and people started thinking they needed 900w PSUs.

In fact I'm still using very same PSU. Antec

I have blue and green cathodes on switches.

Incredible game. And one of my most nostalgic gaming experiences. 2004 was a hell of a year for gaming. So many classic games.

I recall I got HL2 on the day, like I remember pre loading it and stuff. I think back then I had an Nvidia 6600GT which boasted 256mb of vram.

Edit I think it actually had only 128mb vram. Not 100%.

Au contraire, Ravenholm was HL2 at its absolute finest. It was flawless.

Amazing game. HL3 is probably the most anticipated bit of media for me to be released.

Only part of HL2 that sucked was when you were stuck using that supercharged gravity gun for the last 5% of the game or so.

Never played Half Life, but I bought The Orange Box and played it all through in one go, so HL2, Ep1 and Ep2 are pretty much the same game in my head. All brilliant.

I've been meaning to replay the original for a while now. I might have to play them both.

The utterly perfect balance of the weapons is probably one of my favourite things about the Half Life games. As much fun as something like the Modern Warfare games are with ALL TEH GUNZZZZ, the differences between them can be so subtle that there's no point other than to appeal to gun nuts (there is no need to have the M4 and M16 in the same game, in my humble opinion). Conversely, take a game like Colonial Marines (which I recently subjected myself to as it was only £2.50). That had a small selection of really iconic weapons and managed to make nearly all of them dogshit!

Half Life and its sequel manage to give every weapon a purpose and make you want to use them (and not just for XP or achievement purposes). Half Life 2 even balances the simple shotgun, SMG, and pistol against the greatest weapon ever put into a first person shooter. It's not like the chore of having to use a clumsy blaster in the Jedi Knight games, for example. Certain weapons just feel right for the situation.

That's not to say that lots of weapons is necessarily a bad thing, but I feel the weapons of Half Life truly embody the maxim of perfect design being when there is nothing left to take away.

Anyway, happy birthday HL2, this year can you ask mummy and daddy for a little brother or sister please?

I would be up for a GRplayde. Only played through the entire thing once.

I actually bought HL2 on release, but it ran like a dog on my PC so I had to wait for the Orange Box to finally play it.

I still have a Episode 2 to play. It is kind of like unwrapping that last Christmas present which means the day is over. In light of Episode 3's continued absence, I have left it for as long as possible.

It might be time to finally play it. However, my 360 is back home and I only have a PS3 with me - is the PS3 Orange Box really that bad?

It's definitely the best Episode. At times it's better than the main game. One battle towards the end is particularly spectacular.

The whole thing is very well choreographed. If I were to play though in sequence again, I don't think I could handle the cliffhanger another time.

I first played it on the 360 and hated everything about it. Then someone convinced me to try Half-Life on the PC and it just took off from there and now it's in my top five games of all time. Amazing how much difference a keyboard and mouse can make to a game.
