5 years to get one game, or 5 years getting the one game a few chapters at a time in a way that lets us play a new instalment every 18 months or so. Hmmm...

With little or no graphical development. Would you still be slurping over HL1 expansion packs today?

Sooner or later, they need to move on.

It's been so long that I wouldn't be surprised if Valve came out saying, "Hey look, we've finished episode 3... but that's just the set-up for Half-Life 3 coming out next year!"

The thing is, they have. Kinda.

Source is a engine that has been updated heavily. New HDR lighting was added in Epi 1, new particle physics was added in Epi 2 (the houses being blown apart and swirling)

HL is not a churn-out game. The world they created is a work of art. The graphics, the buildings, the occupiers, the weapons...I wouldnt want them to change it, just update it, which they do.

Hopefully this will be available for download on the 360 or will come as part of a Orange Box style package.

It'll be better on PC though.

I'm not fussed with episodes taking this long, Episode 2 was amazing and worth the wait and seeing as Episode 3 is the last then I'm sure it'll be worth the wait as well.

Maybe they'll launch it as DLC for Orange Box on 360? Unless they have developed it enough to warrant a full retail release.

And don't forget Left 4 Dead, which looks so far ahead of Episode 2, despite using the same engine.

The Source Engine is a technical marvel, far better than Epic's Unreal 3 engine - I cannot understand why more developers are using the U3 engine when the Source engine is miles ahead.

Because UE3 chucks around gooseberry fool loads of polys for breakfast while Source only handles large mounds of polys. Don't get me wrong I agree with you in that the source engine is a great piece of kit, hell I used it for my Masters dissertation but when it comes to raw processing power UE3 will win hands down I think.

I just want that original HL source mod to come out, maybe they'll buy it and package it with episode 3.

Black Mesa Source? I take it to be a most auspicious sign that Valve hasn't shut it down.

Just seems to me that Source is more versatile, whereas UE3 tends to have framerate issues when not applied properly - Source is far more scaleable, lending itself better to different projects and different systems.

I honestly don't know too much about the technical side of things though, I'm going off personal experience and reading various developer opinions on the different engines.

Even Valve have admitted the Episode thing didn't work out for them but still...if it takes another year for them to top Episode 2 then let them take another year. Ep 2 is still one of the finest experiences in my gaming life, literally a perfect product and no doubt exactly what its makers intended it to be.
