Who are the enemies now? Surely the Covenant won't be?

Maybe they've bumped the Flood up to a main antagonist role...

I could see a twist of an ancient Flood outbreak on this distant Forerunner planet (or whatever it is) that has evolved past the need for destroying all sentient life, who are now your main allies against some other threat. Intelligent Former Monsters instead of Space Zombies.

Now's their chance to make a clean break from the Flood forever. I honestly hope they take it.

They've gone into a lot of stuff about the Forerunners in Halo: Cryptum, there are a few big revelations and new ideas in that book to flesh out Halo universe a bit. It's worth a read if you're interested in the story and setting.

What I don't understand is why that guy from 343 said people who've finished Halo 3 on legendary would have a good idea where the Halo 4 trailer takes place.

Anyone who's seen the Halo 3 Leg ending (see YouTube) knows that's a load of guff.

He means that we'd know that the trailer links on from that ending, I think.

Halo

That short Halo 4 teaser saved the Microsoft Conference from being a total shambles. (well and Halo: CE remake).

He just meant that the thing the Pillar of Autumn is heading towards is the planet from the Leg. ending. A lot of people though it was a spaceship if GAF is anything to go by.

Fall 2012 :)

As someone said, its amazing how big a impact this announcement had. It certainly made me forget about alot of the low points of Microsoft conference. Can't wait for the first info and screens to be released.

It's just the strength of the IP, I don't know what it is about Halo trailers but they NEVER fail to really excite people in unexplainable ways.

We don't know how long the Chief has been out. I really hope it's a long time. I mean he was supposed to be the last Spartan, even though he kind of wasn't if you read the novels. If he froze himself into the future then he could be even more legendary.

It would also give them an excuse to expand the universe, perhaps adding more alien races, both friendly and not so friendly. Given the ending of Halo 3, perhaps John and Cortana are just alone on an alien world / facility.

Oh gooseberry fool, I love the idea of him being far in the future. Earth and the inner colonies could be rebuilding, surviving characters like Lord Hood, Chips Dubbo and Sgt Stacker could all have offspring. The thought of the Human Race being in trouble and the Master Chief returning to save them like some kind of superhero is spectacular.

Also, the UNSC could have forged an alliance with the Elites and some of the other covenant races. We may see a whole range of races in Halo 4. You could have a Human-Covenant Seperatist alliance as one faction. Remenants of the Covenant Loyalists as another. You could have the new primary antagonists as a third, hopefully with a wide range of enemy types to spice then up. On the side, the flood and the Forerunner bots will still be running about.

It's going to be interesting to see what the Trilogy is about. I assume Cortana going rampant will be a big plotline too.

I just hope, that more than anything that we see less human focused world exploration and more of things like The Ark and ring worlds.

Could be on to something there, they showed rebuilding happening on Reach at the end of the game:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9z2fdTqNka8&t=0m40s

If they do push the timeline forward, other Halo characters could still make an appearance too (summary of the ending of Ghosts of Onyx):
From outside Onyx, the surviving UNSC prowler Dusk watches on as the planet's surface rips apart, to reveal that the entire world is constructed of literally trillions of Sentinels, all connected together to provide an impenetrable defense around the Dyson Sphere at the heart of the planet. Within this sphere, which features terrain similar to that of Earth, Dr Halsey reveals that five pods they recovered after destroying the sentinel factory are pods that suspends the user inside a Slipspace field, the user is extruded into an alternate set of spatial coordinates excluded from time and nothing can harm them, because technically they are not there. 5 of the remaining Spartans, known as Team Katana, are each trapped in a Slipspace Field Pod. Concluding the story, Fred-104 takes command of the remaining survivors who find themselves alone in the vast habitat. Fred orders Dr. Halsey and the others to find the Forerunner artifacts and search for method of escape. Kelly then welcomes the new Spartan III's to the Blue Team, stating that they were "going to make a great team."

Onyz is a Shield World: http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Onyx
There may also be hints at things they're going to explore in Halo 4 in Halo: Cryptum (spoiler warning):
