Halo: The Master Chief Collection Puts More Than a Decade of Halo on One Disc

“Halo 5: Guardians” may not be hitting until the fall of 2015, but faithful followers of Microsoft’s flagship first-person shooter can curb their Covenant-crushing appetite this November with “Halo: The Master Chief Collection.” Landing just in time to celebrate “Halo 2’s” 10-year anniversary on November 11 of this year, this fan-pleasing package contains “Halo: Combat Evolved,” “Halo 2,” “Halo 3,” and “Halo 4” on a single disc for $59.99.

More than a mere bundle of previously released games, however, “The Master Chief Collection” is a beast of an offering brimming with more bonuses, enhancements, and extras than you can shake an Energy Sword at. For starters, each title is optimized to take full advantage of the Xbox One’s power and will run at 60 frames-per-second. So, even the series’ most recent releases – “Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary” and “Halo 4” – will benefit from the jump to Xbox One, sporting much higher fidelity, better shadowing, reflection, and lighting effects, as well as an overall level of detail that trumps the previous console generation.

While “Halo: Combat Evolved,” “Halo 3,” and “Halo 4” will melt your eyeballs, “Halo 2” raises the bar even further... then chucks it, javelin-style, through the heart of your high expectations. Because the Master Chief’s second outing is celebrating a big anniversary, his handlers are giving it an extra coat of awesome. All of the cinematics have received a retina-searing makeover courtesy of Blur Studios; the crazy-talented team is also applying the movie-making magic to a brand-new prologue and epilogue that sheds some light on the Chief’s forthcoming journey in “Halo 5: Guardians.”

Those who replay “Halo 2” will also be treated to new narrative elements via story-expanding Terminals, much like those found in “Combat Evolved Anniversary.” Also like its predecessor, “Halo 2” will see the addition of game-customizing Skulls, as well as the cool ability to swap between its original visual presentation and the optimized version at the touch of a button. Finally, “Halo 2’s” massive multiplayer following can celebrate the big 10 by diving into six map remakes, built from scratch for the Xbox One.

Speaking of fragging friends online, “The Master Chief Collection” features all the multiplayer content from each of the four games, including all previously released download-only maps. While sorting through this enormous amount of solo and multiplayer content might sound like a daunting task on par with fixing a Warthog flat, 343 Industries has got your back. Thanks to what they’re calling the “Master Menu,” players won’t have to hop from menu to menu when navigating this epic offering. All campaign chapters are unlocked from the get-go, so fans can use this intuitive interface to play any mission, any time, at any skill level. Multiplayer will also benefit from the Master Menu, as a variety of user-friendly, streamlined features – such as maps being broken into gameplay types – are being implemented.

The final game will also leverage this seamless UI to offer curated playlists, such as ones that, say, allow you to play through each of the four games’ final missions consecutively, or let you experience every Warthog mission in one sitting. While the prospect of piloting the Chief’s slick ride for several hours straight is exciting, it’s but just one of the reasons this collection will have you up way past the wee hours.

On top of all the tweaks and enhancements to four of our all-time favorite games, “The Master Chief Collection” also features the debut of “Halo: Nightfall,” an all-new digital series executive produced by legendary director Ridley Scott and directed by Sergio Mimica-Gezzan (“Battlestar Galactica,” “Heroes”). While details on the project are protected as fiercely as UNSC secrets, we can reveal that the series – airing weekly – will tell the origin story of an all new character that is pivotal to “Halo 5: Guardians.”

While “Nightfall” will offer a tease of what’s to come in “Halo 5: Guardians,” “The Master Chief Collection” will give fans an actual taste of what it’s like to play it with access to the “Halo 5: Guardians Multiplayer Beta.” Welcoming fans this December, the “Halo 5: Guardians” Multiplayer Beta offers a taste of the new multiplayer gameplay and features coming next year with the game’s full release.

Whether you’re a new Xbox One owner wondering what the fuss is about, or a seasoned Spartan looking to revisit gaming’s signature sci-fi epic, “Halo: The Master Chief Collection” is a must-have that will keep you locked, loaded, and littering the landscape with Covenant corpses until “Halo 5: Guardians” lands next year.

Eurogamer 9

Whatever else might be in included in the Master Chief Collection, that feeling is at the heart of the game: it is a remembrance of things past, and those things are not as they were. The Collection is an instantaneous embrace of past and present that combines gaming's powerful sense of nostalgia with its perpetual arms race of processing and graphical power. It is part of a growing appreciation of the past in a medium which until recently was resolutely forward-looking. Proust would bloody love it.

Gameinformer 9.25

The total package of Halo: The Master Chief Collection is massive and intimidating, but none of it is crammed in or hastily included. Even the modes that appeal to a small dedicated group of Halo fans have received attention. The new Forge mode has an impressive collection of tools, including the ability start from scratch on creating a multiplayer arena. Realistically, it’s not a mode most players will touch, but it has not been diminished as a result.

Master Chief Collection raises the bar for remastered compilations by allowing players to experience these games as they really were, and how our memory has colored them over the years. Whatever your main incentive for getting The Master Chief Collection may be – replay the story, relive the multiplayer – you won’t be disappointed with this revival.

Polygon 9.5

The Master Chief Collection is an impressive history lesson on the evolution of Halo

Ultimately, these issues are small nicks in an otherwise intimidating facade. Halo: The Master Chief Collection sets a bar that other remasters and collections will have difficulty reaching, much less topping. For players new to Halo, who have missed any of the included games, it is a stunning introduction to one of the most beloved series in video games. For Halo fans, it's a package that shows almost as much respect and affection for the Master Chief as they do

Superb value for money and the best excuse to buy an Xbox One yet.

I need a lot more multiplayer reps on real-world servers before I can render my final verdict – I’ve been having a lot of difficulty connecting to custom matches, and matchmaking hasn’t even been switched on yet. However, assuming that’s fixed ahead of launch, Halo: The Master Chief Collection seems on track to pass its fan-service test with flying colors. Other than a few performance glitches and a few questionable sound and art decisions, it gets nearly everything right in both its campaign and multiplayer halves. Even more crucially, these four games live up to their legendary reputations. This collection is nearly everything a Halo fan could possibly want, and a fantastic way for potential new fans to introduce themselves to Master Chief.

Next week I'll be chiming back in with my full review of The Master Chief Collection, once I've played a whole bunch of multiplayer and messed around a bit with Forge (including the new forge-able Halo 2 levels). Be sure to check out the video review and gameplay clips for a look at these games in action, and let me know how you think it's shaping up in the comments below.

Destructoid 9

Digging through the menus, the features go on and on. Forge is back for every game outside of Halo: Combat Evolved. With the new visual updates it's easier than ever to craft new modified versions of favorite levels. Theater is equally great, as it allows rewatching of past matches and the option to find new ones online. Lastly, Halo TV is integrated, as is the Halo Nightfall series, the Halo 5: Guardians beta, and Halo 4's Spartan Ops mode -- all of which aren't live at the time of writing. The prospect of completing the whopping 4,000 Gamerscore will also terrify and excite hardcore fans.

While I think I would have given up playing a Halo 2 remaster on its own after a few months, The Master Chief Collection will keep me busy for quite a while. The sheer number of maps, variants, playlists, and rulesets will keep me interested for months on end. I can already envision myself joining groups of friends who only like particular games, forming separate communities within the collection. Not only that, but this is also the perfect way to replay each campaign if I ever get the itch instead of finding multiple discs. This is the new gold standard for remakes. Well done, 343 Industries.

We’ve had plenty of time with Halo’s upgraded campaigns, but we haven’t had a chance to play the online portion extensively just yet.

We’re withholding our full review for the moment

Overall, I was amazed from start to finish whilst playing through this collection. None of the Halo games are perfect, but these four games together provide an amazing gaming experience. You'd be hard pressed to find better value in any previously released game. I can see series veterans picking this up and being transfixed by it for months to come and I can also see series newcomers picking it up and discovering a whole new world of gaming. It really is the complete collection of Halo.

Judging Halo: The Master Chief Collection by its value proposition alone would be a disservice to its quality but, admittedly, speaks volumes about what you can expect. A wealth of content, detail and care went into this package. It doubles as both a nostalgia-soaked box of memories and a centralized home for newcomers to dig into the vast story of Halo. Despite some technical issues that haunt the overall experience, they’re small footnotes, quickly forgotten as the next dramatic bump in the Master Chief’s journey demands your attention. Halo: The Master Chief Collection is, at least for the time being, the definitive Halo experience and well worth that attention.

While we’re not able to provide our in-depth thoughts on the dense multiplayer suite and server-based bonus content included with Halo: The Master Chief Collection just yet; we’ll be providing a comprehensive review once we’ve thoroughly experienced it in a real-world setting. However, if 343 Industries and Microsoft Studios have treated the multiplayer and cooperative component with the same attentive care, you’re very likely to be in great shape.

The Verge - No score

At $60, The Master Chief Collection is an easy sell for Xbox One owners. Halo fans will want to pick it up because these are the best versions of all four games to date, with the neat bonus of access to the Halo 5 beta next month. Series newcomers will find this collection the perfect entry point, too, with a ton of content to play on a console that — like the PlayStation 4 — still doesn't have a ton.

"Experience the legend of the Master Chief," reads the title screen. That doesn’t quite ring true to me. Instead, I’d recommend you experience the legend of Halo: how Bungie struck gold with a near-flawless formula in 2001, how that formula led to one of the biggest names in gaming, and how it remains untouchable well over a decade on

Hardcore Gamer 5/5

Rarely does a game deliver everything its players could ever ask for, but Halo: The Master Chief Collection does just that. Everything is here that should be here: the campaigns, the multiplayer engines, the maps and the visuals. By adding numerous campaign playlists, six spectacular remastered Halo 2 Anniversary maps, new game modes and increased social connectivity, Halo: The Master Chief Collection finds a way to insert exciting novelty into a collection that would have been spectacular with or without it. The Halo series is all-but required gaming, so 343 should be commended for giving generations old and new the best possible way to play these four titles. Halo: The Master Chief Collection is sure to be on the hard drives of millions for years to come, and it likely will be strange to see an Xbox One owner who doesn’t possess it. This is the definitive first-person shooter experience, a no-brainer purchase for the vast majority of gamers, and the first true system-seller of the new console generation.

The Sixth Axis 9

The Master Chief Collection is a collector’s edition box-set for Halo fans. It features so much game content that it is, perhaps, the best value for money release we’ve seen for the latest generation of consoles but it’s more than just a bumper compendium of games from one of the best series of the modern age.

The Master Chief Collection is a lovingly pieced together, faithful collection of games that changed the industry and multiplayer modes that created a new way to play. The attention to detail is a delight and each game still holds up, especially with the remastering of the two older titles, so there’s potential for this release to introduce Master Chief to a whole new generation.

For those of us who have grown up with him, this collection feels more special than that: it feels like important preservation work that’s valuable for the whole medium, not just for this series.

Videogamer - No score yet

None of this stops The Master Chief Collection being an immense bundle. Collating four groundbreaking shooters, along with every multiplayer map in the series’ history, as well as a live-action TV series and a forthcoming Halo 5 beta, the value of the package makes this comfortably the best series collection ever assembled. Halo fans will zip back and forth to their favourite moments, while new fans will quickly discover what all the fuss is about. Halo 2 may not shine as brightly as some might have hoped, and there’s some minor bugs that can also jar, but nothing stands in the way of what is a fabulous collection.

Rocket Chainsaw 5/5

Halo: The Master Chief Collection is an outstanding package for anyone yet to play the sci-fi saga, and a dream come true for all long-time Halo fans. Halo 2 Anniversary’s remade visuals and soundtrack make it seem like a current-generation title, and Blur should be commended for their absolutely stunning cinematics. Being able to play every Master Chief title together, running at 1080p and 60 frames per second, is an amazing experience. The untouched multiplayer gameplay, with every single map and mode in addition to the six re-imagined maps, collectively make this package a masterpiece. Halo: The Master Chief Collection is a stunning remaster and a magnum opus to the Xbox’s most iconic character.

Game sided 8.5

Single Player Verdict

Halo: The Master Chief Collection is a must-buy for FPS lovers. Where else are you going to get four games for the price of one, let alone the mainline entries in one of the most famed gaming franchises around? Graphical, audio, functionality and game mode changes have been made for the better. 1080p and 60 FPS play just makes combat that much more surreal. Technical problems do plague performance in odds ways throughout each title, however it is but a sacrifice needed to maximize the amount of games available on disk. It’s easy to heap praise on games cherished by millions; it’s hard to say no when the opportunity arises to revisit those memories once again.

Connected Digital World 5/5

Halo: The Master Chief Collection breathes new life into an old friend, and it is most welcome, because a collection of four games from over a decade of development could just end up being the game of the year.

Previous leaks -

Halo: The Master Chief Collection coming to Xbox One this year, collects Halos 1-4

Master Chief is getting a facelift with an HD collection of his exploits. We've learned that Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 4 are being collected in a Master Chief-focused HD remaster coming from Microsoft. Our sources say that the set will zero in on Halo's most famous soldier to refresh audience's memories ahead of Halo 5's release, so curiosities like Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach likely won't be a part of the package. The game's developer is unknown at this point, but considering that Saber Interactive handled Combat Evolved Anniversary and is also working on an unannounced Xbox One project, the team is a likely suspect. Also unclear are plans for digital distribution, resolution and frame-rate (Microsoft bragged that that the next Halo will run at a "blistering" 60fps), piecemeal releases, or if the games will surface on other platforms as well (PC, anyone?).

Microsoft has gone on record saying that it would love to have Halo release more than once every three years. It's used different developers to fill that task since, but we're still pushing two years since Halo 4 launched. To commemorate the first game's 10th birthday, Microsoft released Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary for the Xbox 360, which served as a stop-gap for the 343 Industries-developed Halo 4; there's precedent for this sort of thing. This remake makes a lot of sense for Redmond for a couple of different reasons: it satisfies the more-frequent release desire and it helps fans get caught up on the story. It also gives them the chance to re-experience some of the best console shooters with better looks and sound -- everyone wins!

We reached out for official word from Microsoft and are waiting to hear back, but we're not expecting much beyond the usual, "We don't comment on rumors or speculation."

Seems like Microsoft are getting all their Halo announcements out the way before E3  I'm assuming Halo 2 will get a graphical make over like we saw with Halo 1 Anniversary but I hope they do the same with Halo 3 rather than just give it slightly sharper graphics. I wonder how much this'll retail for as well? Even though they're old games, there's 4 fully fledged campaign modes and i assume some multiplayer stuff as well.

I'd definitely be tempted to pick this up :shifty:

So if that guy's other rumours are true, I'll buy a white X1 Sunset Overdrive bundle in October and the Halo 1-4 pack

He said this about the Halo 5 beta too:
Halo 5 beta is going to be fun... should run throughout December, 6-8 maps, 2 arena maps, 2 forge maps
