Halo: Showtime Orders Live-Action Drama Based on Xbox Franchise, Calls Project Its 'Most Ambitious Series Ever'

Here’s some news of literal epic proportions: In what Showtime is calling its “most ambitious” series to date, the cabler has placed a 10-episode order for a live-action adaptation of the Xbox video game phenom Halo. Kyle Killen (Lone Star, Awake) will serve as EP, writer and showrunner of the series, with Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) directing multiple installments. Both will serve as EPs alongside Steve Spielberg. Production is slated to begin in early 2019.

“Halo is our most ambitious series ever, and we expect audiences who have been anticipating it for years to be thoroughly rewarded,” said Showtime president David Nevins in a statement. “In the history of television, there simply has never been enough great science fiction. Kyle Killen’s scripts are thrilling, expansive and provocative, Rupert Wyatt is a wonderful, world-building director, and their vision of Halo will enthrall fans of the game while also drawing the uninitiated into a world of complex characters that populate this unique universe.”

The series will dramatize “an epic 26th-century conflict between humanity and an alien threat known as the Covenant,” per Showtime. “Halo will weave deeply drawn personal stories with action, adventure and a richly imagined vision of the future.

Showtime’s Halo TV Series Starts Filming In October, Filming Location Revealed

It looks like Showtime’s Halo won’t disappoint fans with another delay in production. A recent update has revealed that the network is set to begin production on the series and also seems to have a location confirmed for filming.

According to Production Weekly, Halo series’ current filming status is set for this October. Furthermore, the listing has also revealed the filming location as Budapest, Hungary.

Last month, Pursue News spotted the Halo scoop from the production listing which revealed that the series was set to begin production this fall.

Since the start of this year, fans have continued to receive assurance that the project is not dead. Showtime’s president and CEO David Nevins also said that “[It’s] still in very active development”.

Though fans expected the series to have seen the light long back ago, it looks like the network is still confident over the in development live action miniseries to see success such as HBO’s Game of Thrones.

The project has high hopes since it is backed by Steven Spielberg as the executive producer. Though the Oscar winner hasn’t had anything to say about the project since its announcement, his recent film Ready Player One had a few Halo references that gave a glimpse of what the live action series would be.

Nightfall interviews (1hr 17 - 1hr 23) & Nightfall Episode 1 (1hr 23- 1hr 53) - http://www.twitch.tv/xbox/b/587517851

Agent Locke, the star of Ridley Scott's Halo: Nightfall, is a playable character in Halo 5: Guardians, 343 Industries revealed today during a San Diego Comic-Con panel.

http://uk.ign.com/articles/2014/07/24/a ... de28000011

Taking place between the events of Halo 4 and Halo 5: Guardians, Halo: Nightfall follows the origin story of legendary manhunter Jameson Locke (Mike Colter) and his team as they are caught in a horrific terrorist attack while investigating terrorist activity on the distant colony world of Sedra. Led by Locke, the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) agents are forced to coordinate with a Sedran commander with a remarkable history and deep-rooted mistrust of ONI. As the plot unravels, they’re drawn to an ancient, hellish artifact where they’re forced to fight for their survival, question everything, and ultimately choose between their loyalties and their lives. Agent Locke is a new character in the Halo universe poised to play a major role in Halo 5: Guardians releasing on Xbox One in 2015.

Led by world class talent such as executive producer Ridley Scott, Scott Free TV President David Zucker, award-winning director Sergio Mimica-Gezzan (Battlestar Galactica, Pillars of the Earth, Heroes), and written by Paul Scheuring (A Man Apart, Prison Break), Halo: Nightfall takes full advantage of Xbox One’s seamless blend of high-quality visuals and rich interactive storytelling features, connecting the games and the series in innovative new ways.

“In science fiction, we're always searching for new frontiers. We're drawn to the unknown,” said Scott. “With Halo: Nightfall, we're pioneering a new medium in terms of interactive storytelling on Xbox. It’s going to be fun for long-time fans to see how the worlds come together with an ambition to attract new fans along the way with what we’ve created.

Halo: Nightfall is included as part of the Halo: The Master Chief Collection and will be accessible digitally on Xbox Live beginning on November 11, 2014.

Joining previously announced Mike Colter (The Good Wife) as Jameson Locke are Christina Chong (24: Live Another Day) as Talitha Macer; Steve Waddington (The Last Of The Mohicans) as Randall Aiken; and Luke Neal (Wilderness) as Michael Bradley Horrigan.

Also cast are Alexander Bhat (film debut) as Alistair Bov Estrin; Christian Contreras (Zero Dark Thirty) as Gregory Aio Ramos; Jennie Gruner (The Other Side Of The Street) as Samantha Wisner; Alexis Rodney (Kick-Ass 2) as Arris Le; Eric Kofi Abrefa (Tight Jeans) as Haisal Wari; Shaun Blaney (Made In Belfast) as Mason Hundley and Sarah Armstrong (Drunk In Love) as Jordan Gaines.

“The Master Chief Collection” also features the debut of “Halo: Nightfall,” an all-new digital series executive produced by legendary director Ridley Scott and directed by Sergio Mimica-Gezzan (“Battlestar Galactica,” “Heroes”). While details on the project are protected as fiercely as UNSC secrets, we can reveal that the series – airing weekly – will tell the origin story of an all new character that is pivotal to “Halo 5: Guardians.”

Showtime Near Deal to Partner with Xbox Studios on ‘Halo’ Series

Xbox Entertainment Studios is deep in negotiations with Showtime to develop a live-action “Halo” drama series that is a high priority for the Microsoft production unit headed by Nancy Tellem.

Xbox Studios has been developing a drama series spin on the vidgame franchise with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin TV banner for more than a year. It’s understood that the company is close to a deal with a pair of showrunners to steer the series adaptation of the expansive bible developed by screenwriter Stuart Beattie, but the deal is not envisioned as a straight-to-series pickup.

Xbox aims to develop “Halo” and other properties as high-end series productions in an effort to enhance the Xbox platform as an entertainment service for its base of 48 million subscribers.

The deal with Showtime has taken a long time to work out because the sides are charting new territory for a show designed to air on Showtime as well as Xbox, with enhanced interactivity built in for the latter platform. Details are still being hammered out, but sources say the plan is to have episodes bow on Showtime first, followed by the Xbox window.

Tellem talked up plans for “Halo” and a host of other shows earlier this week as part of Microsoft’s NewFront presentation but did not mention the Showtime component. The various companies involved have taken plenty of time to work out the deal because “Halo” is such a prized property for Microsoft.

Reps for Showtime and Xbox declined to comment. Spielberg is exec producing the TV adaptation along with Beattie, Amblin’s Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank. Xbox Entertainment Studios is producing with 343 Industries, which oversees all things “Halo” for Microsoft.

Old info -
Microsoft is clearly giving Tellem a budget to play with: she described the production quality of the upcoming “Halo” series on the level of HBO’s “Game of Thrones,”

Microsoft has clarified that Steven Spielberg will be the executive producer of the new Halo TV series. There's no other news on other creative contributors or when the show might air.

Veteran TV director Sergio Mimica-Gezzan is set to direct a new chaptered “Halo” digital feature project for 343 Industries, Xbox Entertainment Studios and Scott Free Productions, TheWrap has learned.

Ridley Scott and Scott Free TV president David Zucker will executive produce the live-action project, which is expected to debut before the end of the year.

The trio of companies have their eye on “Prison Break” creator Paul Scheuring to write the project, which is completely different than the TV series that Steven Spielberg is producing for Xbox One.

Expected to follow the same format as Machinima's “Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn,” the story is set in the 26th century and follows a surgically-enhanced super soldier who is not Master Chief, an individual familiar with the project told TheWrap.

Microsoft is expected to announce more details about the project at E3 in June.

Easily the most interesting thing to come out of that conference. Not sure why it couldn't wait till E3 though seeing as how it had absolutely NOTHING to do with Xbox One.

Hopefully they'll also manage to get Blomkamp involved in some fashion.

I'll be interested to see what they do with this though. Surely it can't be about the Chief? I'd imagine it's more likely to follow either a new Spartan or a small squad of UNSC Marines, perhaps even ODSTs. Could probably sneak Nathan Fillion in there somewhere too.

It gets the announcement of the new Xbox onto non-gaming websites like Variety plus it's a Xbox One exclusive.

To answer Wiggy's question they're comparing the production quality to Game of Thrones, we shall see.

Must have missed that part. I was probably too busy tweeting my horror at the state of the reveal. :D

This will all come down to the budget and I fear that a TV series will not give fans the spectacle that they're expecting. Halo is a $200m blockbuster movie, not a 10-13 episode series in my opinion. Plenty of series are more suited to a TV series than a movie - I'm thinking Mass Effect, Fallout - but this isn't it. I'd love to be proven wrong though and there's a big gap in the market for a HBO/AMC-level sci-fi series.

They'll probably just take Falling Skies and re-skin the rebels as marines and Spartans. Job done.

20 mins of alien fighting followed by 40 mins of slow-mo kid on a skateboard with marines watching and smiling at him remembering the good old days.

Steven Spielberg has just announced the director of the new Halo TV series. Apparently it's a person with a great sci-fi pedigree and who has generated billions of dollars in revenue. Don't worry everyone, it's in safe hands. It's...

This was one of the announcements I was most excited about. I also quite enjoyed FUD so It'll be cool having them expand on the universe in a full series.

Me too. This wasn't some two-bit up and coming director it's Steven Spielberg who knows what he's doing. I think the announcement would have gone down much better at E3.

You know who is directing the Halo pilot?

According to trusted sources, I’m hearing none other than NEIL BLOMKAMP!

For those of you who have been living under a rock the last few years, back in 2007, Blomkamp directed a trilogy of live-action short films set in the Halo universe, to promote the release of Halo 3. Blomkamp was then slated to direct his first feature-length film, an adaptation of the Halo series of video games, produced by Peter Jackson. The Halo movie then completely imploded and Blomkamp went on to make a hot little movie set in South Africa that became a worldwide smash hit called District 9.

As long as it doesn't interfere with District 10, I'm okay with this.

Fetch me old brown trousers, bring them to me now, I'll wear them in the rigging as they fire across the bow. Fetch me old brown trousers, I fear we may be hit, for even if they shoot me now, they'll never see me... ;)
