His name is Atriox, a Brute enslaved by the Covenant who eventually rose up against his masters and became a legend. His rebellion inspired the birth of The Banished, a savage army of mercenaries and killers now on the brink of acquiring the most powerful weapons platform the galaxy has ever seen. The only things between Atriox and his prize are Captain James Cutter and the crew of the USNC Spirit of Fire. Outgunned and long past any hope for reinforcements, Cutter’s survival depends on how quickly he can master the first law of the battlefield: Know your enemy.

Halo Wars: Definitive Edition Early Access Available Now

It’s finally here – I’m thrilled to say early access to Halo Wars: Definitive Edition starts today for folks who pre-ordered the digital version of Halo Wars 2 Ultimate Edition!

The first Halo Wars was special for so many reasons, but I always loved how great that game made RTS feel on console. As a die-hard PC RTS player, I was impressed with how well the genre’s traditional keyboard and mouse controls translated to a controller. When we started to work on Halo Wars: Definitive Edition, we wanted to make sure that the experience still shines and that the game looks better than it did seven years ago. However, what’s most exciting to me is finally bringing that experience to PC. Having Halo Wars on PC has been something the community has asked for since the game launched so many years ago, and it’s surreal that it has finally happened with Halo Wars: Definitive Edition.

Halo Wars: Definitive Edition is set to launch in February alongside Halo Wars 2 Ultimate Edition, but we thought it would be great to give everyone a chance to start playing now to sharpen their skills in preparation for the next game. The game you’ll get today is early access – it’s only available to people who pre-ordered the digital version of Halo Wars 2 Ultimate Edition. It also means that we’re still putting the finishing touches on the game before launch, so expect to see more improvements come online between now and February. The team worked insanely hard to bring both campaign and multiplayer online before release in February and we can’t wait to hear what you think.

In addition to the great campaign and multiplayer modes fans will remember, Halo Wars: Definitive Edition also features a new multiplayer session browser in place of the legacy matchmaking system. This allows players to create and join their favorite multiplayer, skirmish, or co-op campaign games quickly and easily on their preferred platform.

If you don’t receive your code today, don’t worry! Codes are rolling out through the coming weeks, but anyone who pre-ordered by December 14 should receive one today, so keep an eye out – check out the FAQ here for more info on how to find and redeem your code. And of course, since Halo Wars: Definitive Edition is an Xbox Play Anywhere title, your code will work on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PC!

We’re working hard at 343 Industries on the first update, as well as on the upcoming Blitz Beta – and of course, the full launch of Halo Wars 2 on February 21. There’s a lot of goodness coming your way in the New Year, but for now, download your copy and get re-acquainted with the Spirit of Fire, because things are going to get crazy for them next year!

See you online!

Dan

343 never cease to amaze at how utterly gooseberry fool they are. Halo Wars Definitive Edition - let's remove matchmaking!

Hope this isn't the case for HW2 as well otherwise this has gone from being one of my most looked forward to games to being one I don't even bother with. I've got that Halo 4 feeling all over again..

EDIT - as if that wasn't gooseberry fool enough. You can also apparently pause multiplayer games, meaning people are just pressing pause when they start losing. It just beggars belief. Everything 343 is associated with literally turns to gooseberry fool..

How on earth did they think adding a pause option to multiplayer would turn out?
I could almost understand it if they expected games to take 4 or 5 hours each as people would obviously need a break but even then there'd have to be rules about setting the length of the pause and both agreeing to it or it's an instant loss for the person activating the pause.

Insane decision.

THQ is assisting with the physical PC release, this bit caught my eye:
purchases of the physical retail release of Halo Wars 2 on Windows 10 PC will grant digital access to the Xbox One version via Xbox Play Anywhere.

How does this work? Could I get it for PC, download on Xbox, then sell the PC copy?

Hi everyone –

Last June we invited our fan community to jump in and get hands-on with a slice of Halo Wars 2 with our first multiplayer beta. As discussed, we received a tremendous amount of valuable feedback on both the technical and gameplay side that has helped the team continue to refine and improve the overall Halo Wars 2 experience as we march towards launch on Feb. 21, 2017.

As we enter the final stretch of development I’m happy to announce one more opportunity to get hands-on with Halo Wars 2 and ask for your participation in one final large-scale multiplayer beta. This time around the focus will be exclusively on our brand-new card-based game mode, Blitz, and it’ll be available on both Windows 10 PC and Xbox One beginning Jan. 20, 2017.

Blitz is our new twist on RTS gameplay that combines the deck building and split-second decision making of card-based strategy play with explosive tactical combat in the Halo universe. Your card deck, along with your faction leader, are your greatest resources as you assemble a collection of air, ground and infantry units and seek to out-think and out-maneuver your opponents on the battlefield. We’re really excited about this new mode and look forward to unleashing Blitz upon the community to play and run through its paces prior to launch.

The Halo Wars 2 Blitz Beta will officially begin on Friday, Jan. 20 and is slated to run through Jan. 30, 2017. The Blitz Beta will take place on the map “Proving Grounds,” and will offer 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 gameplay via matchmaking on both Windows 10 PC and Xbox One. One thing we’re particularly excited about is the fact that all of the Faction Leaders and Blitz cards that will be available in the full game at launch on Feb. 21 will be included and available to play and experiment with during the beta, offering wide breadth of strategic and gameplay options. You’ll also find a series of daily and weekly challenges to participate in as we work to stress test those systems.

While it’s important to note that none of the cards or progress you earn within the Blitz Beta will carry over to the retail game (though the experience and strategies you develop certainly will!), we do have two special rewards that will apply to the full game. As a special incentive and thank you, everyone who participates in the Blitz Beta will be awarded up to two free in-game Blitz card packs in the final retail version when it ships in February. You’ll earn one card pack just for logging into the Blitz Beta and another one after you’ve completed your first match. So jump in and get a leg up on the competition before launch in February, help us test aspects of the game AND earn yourself two bonus card packs for Halo Wars 2 come launch!

I’m personally really excited to share this next big milestone with our fan community and look forward to your feedback, which we’ll be watching closely in the Halo Waypoint forums. The team will be monitoring all of our backend and under-the-hood systems but we also look forward to your thoughts around gameplay, balance and the Blitz “meta” game.

Blitz is certainly one of the more exciting aspects of Halo Wars 2 but we’ve got plenty more goodness coming in the full game on Feb. 21 including a robust campaign (single and co-op), additional MP modes (Domination, Strongholds and Deathmatch) and Blitz Firefight.

On behalf of the entire team, thanks for your support and excitement around Halo Wars 2 thus far. We can’t wait to share Blitz mode with you starting Jan. 20!

See you online,

Dan

Halo Wars 2 feels like a return to the C&C era of real-time strategy

Two videos on Halo Wars 2: one dives into campaign and multiplayer impressions, and the other is raw 1v1 gameplay.

In Halo 3, a decade ago, I leapt out of the Covenant's Banshee aircraft time and again to board giant Scarab walkers, then fought my way to the core to blow up the behemoth from the inside. Eventually they became a trivial threat for something so huge, like the AT-ATs of Rogue Squadron I so casually brought down by the dozen with tow cables.

In a near-final build of Halo Wars 2 I played at a preview event last week, I built a Scarab and sent it lumbering towards an enemy base with a supporting troop of Wraith tanks and Banshees and Hunters. The Scarab didn't just destroy the base. It trampled it. The Creative Assembly made the Scarab fearsome again, and from my hours with Halo Wars 2, I think they've given every other unit in the Halo sandbox just as much love.

The Creative Assembly's RTS take on Halo is out on February 21st, with a little something for everyone. There's a campaign, playable solo or in co-op. Multiplayer contains several distinctly different modes. The standard deathmatch requires multitasking base-building and micromanaging units, while skirmish pits you and a co-op buddy against the AI.

Domination is like deathmatch, but instead of winning as the last player standing, you control key map points to reduce your opponent's ticket count. The more casual Strongholds mode gives you infinite resources and pre-built bases, putting the focus on huge army slugfests and map control. And Blitz mode gives you control points to hold, either against other players or waves of AI (just like Halo proper's Firefight), using a card system to spawn in units. Blitz has a whole meta deckbuilding layer.

So yes, there are cardpacks and microtransactions to be had, but Blitz itself is really fun—a totally unit-focused mode that will require smart deck composition and precise army control to come out on top.

I played through a single campaign mission of Halo Wars 2, which wasn't enough time to get a feel for the story or how complex the campaign will be. I spent most of my time in the multiplayer, playing a 1v1 deathmatch, 2v2 Strongholds and Blitz Firefight against the AI. All three were fun, but I think deathmatch is where my heart lies: I love basebuilding too much to give it up, though in Blitz I was determined to set a new high score on the account I was playing on.

As you'd expect from The Creative Assembly's pedigree, Halo Wars 2 feels like a real PC RTS. Its basebuilding and tech trees are simpler than, say, Starcraft, but on the whole the game gives me a 90s Command & Conquer vibe. It's fast, flashy, and filled with fun unit abilities to juggle and use at the right moments.

In the video above, I talk about Halo Wars 2's different modes, its mouse-and-keyboard controls and sci-fi setting. The video below is an entire 1v1 deathmatch, which should give you a good overview of most of the UNSC's buildings and troops.

Blitz Beta out now for XB1/Win10 -

BLITZ 101

The Halo Wars 2 Blitz Beta is nearly upon us which means it’s time for a special edition of the Halo Community Update to get you fully up to speed on everything you need to know to hit the ground running and emerge victorious on the battlefield! Blitz is a new way to play Halo Wars and offers a fast, card-based strategic experience that’s quite different from the standard RTS-style PVP matches of the past (don’t worry, those modes are all still included in the final game!). The Blitz Beta will be avaialble on Xbox One and Windows 10 PC but for the sake of this guide, when controls are stated they will be in reference to the console version.

Winning or losing a Blitz match ultimately comes down to a few key things:

Understanding the game mechanics
Leader & Deck composition
Battlefield decision-making
Luckily these are exactly the key things we're going to dive into today. To kick things off, let’s first start with the basics and overall game mechanics.

WHAT IS BLITZ?
Blitz is a new addition to the Halo Wars experience offering a twist on RTS gameplay that combines the deck building and split-second decision making of card-based strategy play with explosive tactical combat in the Halo universe. Your card deck, along with your faction leader, are your greatest resources as you assemble a collection of air, ground and infantry units and seek to out-think and out-maneuver your opponents on the battlefield. Blitz is a PVP gametype that offers 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3 configurations via Xbox Live matchmaking.

WHAT’S THE OBJECTIVE?
The goal in Blitz is to score more points than your opponent(s) by using the cards in your deck to capture and hold the majority of control points on the map. To capture a point all you need to do is position your units over it – air or ground will suffice – and it’s yours for the taking provided your opponent isn’t there to contest it. Any time you are holding more control points than your opponent, you will start to accumulate score points. If both teams control an equal amount of points, then scoring is paused until one team re-takes majority control. The winner of a Blitz game is the team to reach 200 points first OR the team with the highest score when the 12-minute game timer expires.

THE ENERGY MUST FLOW
Blitz streamlines a lot of traditional RTS systems like base building, skill trees and hardcore resource gathering in exchange for fast paced battles but that’s not to say there isn’t a tiny bit of resource management to contend with. Energy is the “currency” in a Blitz match and it’s “spent” every time you play a card based on the card’s cost. You have two primary ways of generating energy during a game:

Players will slowly generate energy automatically during a match at a very slow rate but Energy Cells will periodically drop down onto the battlefield offering a chance to increase your energy gains (and that of your teammates as well!). The more energy cells you collect, the more your permanent energy gain “tick rate” increases. Building enough energy to amass a large army or play key cards at crucial times is a huge strategic component of Blitz so when you see an Energy Cell drop you should seriously consider going for it before your opponent does.
When one of your unit dies, you will be refunded a portion of its initial energy cost. While this isn’t a solid source of income to rely on in and of itself, it does allow players to at least offer a quick counter or response if they come out on the losing end of a skirmish.
Note that Airborne Units and units affected by Deployment Fatigue cannot collect Energy Cells.

LEAD BY EXAMPLE
The first decision you’ll need to make before jumping into a match is which leader you’ll choose to fight with. The Blitz Beta includes all of the leaders that will be available in the full game and each offers a distinctive playstyle with a few unique cards. Each leader can have three total decks saved and assigned to them. There’s a default starting deck (you can use it as-is or edit to your liking) in addition to two more spots to create your own custom decks from scratch. Here’s a quick look at each of the initial Leaders and their default starting decks:

Didn't play it much but that's because I wasn't impressed with what I did play. Clearly didn't enjoy the new mode. Was really looking forward to this at one time but now I will wait for reviews and maybe get it after a price drop if the standard versus mode is intact and any good. Blitz was wank.

HALO WARS 2 BLITZ BETA
Wow, it’s hard to believe that ten full days of the Blitz Beta have come and gone so quick! Many, many players jumped at the chance to take Blitz for a test drive on Xbox One and Windows 10 and we’ve gathered a ton of great feedback, bug reports and game data to help the development team.

As the beta fades into the distance Dan Ayoub, 343's Studio Head of Strategy Games Development, passed along the following note for our community:

“On behalf of the entire Halo Wars 2 team I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who participated in the Blitz beta! Your feedback and the data we gathered during the beta is critical to helping us make Halo Wars 2 as awesome as possible when it launches on Feb. 21. I hope you’ll continue to share your thoughts and feedback for the rest of Halo Wars 2 when you experience the full game in just a few short weeks. See you online!”

I don’t know about you but I love a good infographic. Thankfully the team has us covered with this sweet snapshot of some of the more memorable statistics from the Blitz Beta:
