Played through it couple weeks ago, via Xbox 360 version.

A timeless classic, easily in my top 10 games of all time. I hope us console peasants get to play this Sigil somehow.

Do you often contemplate the complexity of life?

Sony has released a vid celebrating the anniversary of Doom.

Plot twist: The first computer they show is an Amiga and it wasn't released for that :fp:  .

Nah we Amiga owners got Gloom which was clearly the superior title:

I had an A1200 with additional memory and a (small) maths accelerator; both Gloom and AB3D ran reasonably well on it. The graphics were blocky but the games were still fun to play. Also, there was an AB3D II produced at the end of the Amiga's time but that needed an absolute beast of a machine to run it :-) .

Yeah was playing Ultimate Doom. Usually I play on Hurt Me Plenty but pushed it out a bit and did Ultraviolence instead. Man that's quite the step up.

Ended up biting the dust and ending at E2M4, mostly because I ran out of ammo and had to fight a Baron of Hell (The Pink ones) with the Chainsaw. Didn't end well.

Is there anyway of still firing up the multiplayer on these?

Imagine some old skool deathmatch games.
I'd show you younguns some tricks in Quake 1 DM :)

I think there is on the source ports for Doom. I was actually thinking that earlier on today.

I've always wanted us to pick some of these older games and revive their multiplayer. Doom, Quake, Jedi Knight, Command and Conquer. Think it would be pretty cool.

strawberry float. Yes.

"Old Skool PC MP - Gaming like it's 1999"

Quake 3 arena. Team fortress classic. Jedi Knight II.
Half-life 1 DM. Battlefield 1942. Age of empires.

This could work 8-) :toot:

When I was tracking down the freeware version of C&C I found there was a freeware version of original C&C's multiplayer knocking about, I think it had matchmaking and stuff. Don't know if that's worth investigating.

UT99 is a definite one to look at as well.

So say we set a night each week, (Thursdays for example) and we play a retro multiplayer game. We can change it up every other week so we don't spend too long with any one game, but with the option to come back if there's enough demand. I think it'll require a thread of it's own though.

Part of the issue is that different people have different games, so we should start with ones that are easy enough to get started. Doom seems like the obvious choice as it's the progenitor of Deathmatch and having looked into it, it's gonna be really easy to get set up.

EDIT: Alien Vs Predator 2000 :datass:

Also (for me at least) - Step one: Buy a PC.

Though my old pc in the loft ought to be fine.
I'll report back.

Yeah, we're only looking at older games so you won't need anything too powerful. The Doom sourceports run well one lower end systems as well.

Hb d :toot:

One of the greatest games of all time. Somehow remains as playable today as it ever was, I think I could happily put it on now and play through in wun sitting.

My first doom was the 32x version, and strawberry float what everyone says because I absolutely loved it. God knows how many times I played through it

Then I played the pc version at a friend's house and saw just how much was let out of the the 32x version  :x

Next up was the PlayStation version which remains my absolute favourite. So many happy memories playing linked PlayStations, dragging a bloody crt tv around and staying up all night playing deathmatch. The one time we decided to play e1m1 in coop and then ended up playing both doom and doom 2 back to back without stopping

Didn't really like doom 3, but the latest doom is really good.

Doom
