I'm watching the new BBC series Hard Sun (I'm about to start the final episode) and it seems to make less and less sense as the series goes on.
The series starts well enough with a pretty solid plot of the main characters finding out that the government is hiding the fact that for some reason the world will end in 5 years (the file name is the Hard Sun of the title) but then it changes into a cop show and not a particularly good one.
The police are incompetent and rapid response teams in London seem to always be 15 minutes from any location no matter how central they are. One of the 2 main characters has a son that the police don't seem to know about despite him being in a secure unit and they also seem to get the gooseberry fool beaten out of them constantly and then are back 5 seconds later as if nothing has happened.

This is supposed to be one of the big new series for the BBC but it's just really, really odd so is anyone else watching or has watched it (It's all on Iplayer) and what did you think?

I watched the first ten minutes or so of the first episode but hated it pretty much straight away. The main guy is an appalling cliché and the dialogue seemed clumsy and unnatural.

Also, the first scene where the woman and man fight is weird. She seems to stab the bloke in the side of the head but then he seems fine and walks away, pours gasoline all over the place and sets the house of fire. It's trying for something different but it's just irritating and jarring when that sort of thing happens straight away in a series.

I won't be watching it again.

I have not seen any of it, but the crazy new woman sat behind me was just talking about it.

“I saw this really scary thing the other day, called Hard Sun, all about a global extinction event that is coming and it made me wonder what are they hiding from us because we would never know would we? If they were hiding it from us I mean? How would we know?”

I don’t think she is bad at her job, although I don’t work directly with her, I think she’s just the sort that believes in whatever bullshit she hears.

Anyway, I think I am taking this thread massively off topic. ;)

Why? Is the world actually ending? As you are a scientist, is that a coded warning? Is the crazy lady correct?

Sometimes I like to imagine living in the world where scientists are actually part of a global conspiracy. It would be so cool, and I think I'd be really good at it, like I'd get a real kick out of making up something like climate change and convincing billions of people it's true.

Alas, we live in the boring world where science is real :(

I know what you mean, life would be much more fun (it actually wouldn’t but it sounds it) if there were conspiracies.

I like science but it does make things more boring. Imagine how exciting life would be if you believed in magic or how exciting it must have been if you lived in the 1500s and actually believed that there were islands out there with dragons on.

strawberry floating scientists, ruining everything. :x

Erm, I just finished the final episode and I assume there won't be a series 2 then.

That was all sorts of odd.

I just googled and apparently they have a 5 year plan so erm, what the strawberry float?

How will they get round the fact the sun is being destroyed by a black hole? Maybe some kind of crossover episode with Dr Who?

If you like Luther then it's similar to that (same creator).
Completely over the top and crazy, but good fun if you don't think about it too hard.

It's really quite odd as who exactly is going to get up the next day and still go to work while they can clearly see the the sun is strawberry floated? They have more series in the pipeline but unless they have a pretty much unlimited budget I'm unsure how they can recreate a global meltdown of all public order unless they can somehow explain why only people in London give a gooseberry fool about imminent extinction?

Erm, yeah. Totally bonkers.
