Just finished listening to the 4hours and 36 minute account of the madness of the German city of Munster in 1535. It was strawberry floating brilliant! Looking forward to delving into the back catalog.

I'm just shy of 2 hours into this. It's very informative and entertaining! These are some fantastic podcasts, I might listen to Thor's Angels next.

I suppose what with your YouTube show you'd also appreciate the whole "Theatre of the Mind" style. I can't tell but it seems like he records the whole thing in one take.

I really want this story about Munster to be made into a high budget TV show, along the lines of Rome, Spartacus etc. It's just so awesome.

Sounds great. Will give that a listen when I'm done with Fall of the Republic I. It's really interesting. Loads of things about how Rome was run which I've just never even heard of, and not out of being completely ignorant on the subject, either.

I also very much enjoyed the one about the atomic bombs. I was fully aware of the strategy followed by Britain but it was interesting to hear Hiroshima and Nagasaki put into context with that.

He never stated in plain words his own opinion on whether the act was justified or not. I guess he is a supporter of Truman's decision. As far as I understood the 'logical insanity' thing, he is saying that in the climate of the time it was a rational (and just) course of action.

If that's the case, it would have been nice to hear some more statistics to back that argument up. For example how many Japanese people had died just in the fire bombings up to that point, and some speculation as to how many people would have died if the war continued as it was going and 'Fat Man' and 'Little Boy' were not dropped.

I think that's because there is no clear answer to that question. He made it clear that he considers it a war crime, but one in a long, long list of them, and that really if you look at it, they probably did save many, many Japanese lives.

He also mentioned, after reading the account of the fire bombing of Germany, that really there is nothing worse than that, and if there is, it's by a matter of degrees which isn't going to make any difference to the person being bombed. Just by that alone you can infer that doing the same thing (the first fire raid of Tokyo in 1943 killed nearly 100,000!) but with a single bomb was a show of force which had an effect countless fire bombings failed to.

Bloody amazing to think Kings would die and leave their entire Kingdoms to Rome. Mentals.

I can't understand that bit. Why would they do that? Were they hoping that Rome would then be kind to their people? Rome was usually pretty damn harsh on other nations.

EDIT: He only has the last 17 episodes up on iTunes. I wanted to listen to it from the start.

He said that it was generally done for various domestic reasons. A quick wiki of Pergamon comes up with this:

When Attalus III (138–133 BC) died without an heir in 133 BC, he bequeathed the whole of Pergamon to Rome, in order to prevent a civil war.

Thanks for the heads up, this is now my podcast of choice for my lunchtime walks. Can only listen on headphones though, too much info I want to hear to just have on a background noise whilst working (like most of the gaming podcasts I listen too).

Just finished listening to the Logical Insanity episode. Amazing what difference it makes when some places a major historical event in context with what surrounds it. Firebombing does just sound the most awful thing you can do to non-combatants.

Are the earlier episodes available anywhere to download? I've just started the Death Throws of a Republic but after that all I've got is the Wrath of Khans ones and I wanted some individual topics to try and break up such a long slog over only 2 topics.

I'm close to the end of Death Throes of the Republic, it really is a fantastic series. Can't wait to get stuck into Wrath of the Khans. :wub:

It just worked for me no problem...but since the show was released 4 hours ago, it's been downloaded 32,000 times (and it's a four hour show...so that's a big download file). So, yeah, the servers get hit pretty hard for about the first 3 or 4 days after a release.
