Awesome. I started with Blueprint for Armageddon, my first dip into history since my GCSE in 1995. Always thought I hated the subject: turns out I just had a terrible teacher.

I listened to all 14 or so hours of Blueprint... and it flew by. I'm very excited about this new episode. Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

After Blueprint, where should I head next? Any recommendations?

I find that history is an incredibly engaging subject when you're looking at the right period and the person or people who are teaching are enthusiastic and engaging.

That said, I'm not hugely into the Hardcore History podcasts, the guy is fantastically good but he isn't looking at stuff that I'm really into.

Dan went through a period of doing single topic shows and I think I enjoyed those the most. Logical Insanity was one of them looking at the US decision to drop the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. There was another on the 'Red threat' that was pretty good. But my favourite was the one about the Anabaptist siege in Munster, can't remember what it was called.

The epic fall of Rome series he did was awesome. Chronicled the soap opera that was the end of the Roman Republic and it's fall into Ceasar-led Empire. Great stuff.

Think I'll give one of these a go. I was wanting something to listen to other than music and this sounds like something I'd enjoy them.

The one recommended on the first page sounds very interesting (Blitz one) so I'll start with that. I have a notoriously poor attention span these days, but the topic is of interest so I'm sure I'll last the duration :D

Where did you get them? I went on the site as the Logical Insanity one was free. I click the download link and it just opens a new window and starts playing?

I subscribe to the podcast through iTunes but I'm not sure how long they stay free.

The reason Carlin's history is probably more interesting than what you were taught in school is because he focuses more on people than just facts and events. Imagine reading a novel in which there was no characterisation and plot event followed plot event without end; which is basically how most GCSE history is presented, as the world's worst written novel.

So basically, History teaching needs to be fleshed out, given a human perspective and told like a factual drama, because a run down of the cold hard facts of events is very often boring.

Which (as far as I know) is the complete opposite of what Gove brought in.

We need to trap Gove in a lift and pipe in the entire collected works of Carlin until he relents.

When that window opens click "file>save page as" in your browser window and it should download the audio file.

That should really go without saying. Michael Gove is the worst banana split.

I use the Podcast Addict app. Just downloaded a load of episodes via that.

I am not sure that trapping the Chief Whip of the Conservative Party in a lift with the collected works of Carlin/pipe bombs is going to have much success in changing history education in UK schools. ;)

I'd also like to point out that my post was entirely made in jest and was in no way an incitement to whatever it was I mentioned. You know, just in case.

I'm just going to go back to making this rather fetching piece of headgear out of foil.
