Im guessing you meant the tv i linked to. My mate isnt to worried about the glasses but then again he would rather go to a shop so he may pop down and have a look

Oh hello. I would like one TV, please.

Looking for something in the 40"/42" range, mainly for gaming but also for a bit of HD video stuff. I had my first look at 3D last week. Not impressed, would rather pay for a better 2D set than compromise on quality for the inclusion of 3D. WhatHiFi suggest the Panasonic TX-P42G30B and the Samsung UE40D5520. Which one of these two would yous recommend, or are there any other sets I should be looking at instead? I don't want to spend over £500.

EDIT: Alright, so, despite saying just up there that I don't want 3D in my face, I've been having a look at that TX-P42ST30B. Is it a pretty decent set, then? How does it compare with the other two I mentioned when displaying 2D stuff? I can get it delivered for £530 from that pixmania.co.uk (never heard of the site before, anyone had any experience with them?) and there's also a review on its Amazon page that says Comet are doing it for £500 with two sets of glasses. Can't find anything like that on the site though, I'm wondering if they've gotten confused with the Currys UT30 deal (also, what are the differences between that set and the ST?). It seems worth considering for £530, anyway.

Advise.

Compared to the Pana that particular sammy set is very average, the comparable one to the panasonics you linked too would be

The UE406530

or

the 7000 or 8000 LED sets.

No.

You get a fancier frame (some say it's worse as the Samsung logo lights up and also breaks the flow of the design as it sticks out a bit on the 8000) and slightly less cross-talk on the 3D.

The frame is a bit big for my liking on the GT but its a nice set, cheers Glowy.

The 46" samsung isn't much bigger than my 40" Samsung. It's got to look a bit discrete or the squaw won't take the bait.

A guy I worked with who is a massive Panasonic fan and detests the Samsungs described the 8000 as looking like a tacky picture frame and ever since then I can't unsee the image from my head. :lol:

That's my favourite TV of 2011, it hits price:performance ratio so well. The GT30 and VT30 are ever so slightly better but most of what you're paying for are secondary features; freesat hd, THX picture mode, ISF advanced picture editing tools, DLNA, USB HDD recording etc. The other options besides the better plasmas from Panasonic are going to be Samsung and Sony LED screens, neither of which can match any plasma for black levels and motion response, so they're other options, but worse options.

The other similar option would be the G30 Panasonic plasma. It's Panasonic's best 2D only plasma. Has Freesat HD, has THX, has USB HDD recording, has DLNA. Looks cooler than the ST30 with a sleeker better frame. It's usually a very similar price too. The picture difference is between the ST30 having "infinite black pro" contrast rating vs "infinite black" on the G30. Which just about edges the ST30 for me even though I'd never use 3D but would quite like DLNA and THX picture mode.

I even got my sister to lend me £100 as I wouldn't have been able to afford it until Friday. Reckon it'll be with me towards the end of next week. What's the deal with the 3D? Do any channels broadcast in it apart from the premium stuff like Sky Sports?

Nope.

I know BBC have done one off stuff in 3D, I presume there might be more content coming.

The only way to get regular 3D content at the moment is to have a Sky World (Movies and Sport) HD package (£63.25 a month), you don't have to pay more for it after that. The reason being the Sky 3D channel is full of Films and Sport content.

Thanks for the info. I'm not fussed about 3D but I thought I would pick up a pair of glasses for the hell of it if there was anything worth watching. Looks like it'll be something I might consider in a year or so.

I'm glad you said that, would've rather not had to settle for a 40" set. Those other ones you mentioned were way out of my price range, so I ended up also going for the ST30. Good thing I ordered when I did, it was up on Amazon for £450 for just two or three days, now it's shot up to £630. Should arrive on Tuesday. This is exciting.
