It does unfortunately, as OLED screens can’t even get as bright set on Standard.

But as you’re using an LCD there’s no reason the Game mode on your set should be much darker or different though. If you go into the menus see if you can turn the backlight up.

Lag outside of Game mode differs on every set but it’s usually drastically higher and I wouldn’t recommend it (some TVs like mine don’t give you a choice, it just changes and locks to Game HDR when detected).

Picked up a Sony KD-55XE8596 on Monday. It's replaced a 32" Sanyo which was fine but I since had been using a 24" (I think) TV for nearly two years before, I've wanted a new TV for while, especially after trying to play GT Sport on the smaller one :dread:.

First thought was a 49" one but I measured the room and worked out that we could just about fit a 55" one. Was still drawn to the 50" Panasonic FX750 but my girlfriend didn't like that it was silver, was a Panasonic and the fact that the stand it came with looked crap. So talked it over with a guy at Currys as we were just wandering around looking at the same bloody TV's over and over again and he recommended the Sony (and he had a Sony shirt on fancy that...).

Happy with the choice so far. TV and Youtube content has looked good and my Switch is upscaling very nicely. Need to get my PS4 back off my sister now as I will actually be able to see what I'm doing but I might just get a PS4 Pro to actually make better use of the TV.

It is bloody massive though. Fills the room and we're sitting about 9 feet away.

This is the thing that worries me. I have used a 26 inch screen in my living room for years now and a jump to "only" a 40 inch screen will seem huge.

I felt the same with my 55 inches at first but you get used to it pretty quickly. You’ll then go round to someone else’s house with something smaller and it’ll suddenly feel really small in comparison.

For a 55" 4K screen you will want to be between 3 and 7.5 feet away. 3.7 feet is the optimum distance.

I tried to simulate what it would be like by finding a piece of cardboard the same size. Doesn't quite do it size difference justice really. I think I saw on a few of the TV's at Currys that you can try them for a bit and then take them back if you don't like them? Might be worth looking into if you are unsure. I tell you what though, split screen on Mario Kart is great now. With four players it's almost like we each have an old TV to ourselves, a TV that is still bigger than what I used to play MK64 on...

I know I'm outside the optimum distance but I'm kind of glad I'm not any closer to the TV as it would be a bit too much for me. It's the odd thing though, getting hung up on the technology and quality of the picture when I knew I'd be too far away to really see the difference.

Thanks, yeah, I measured out a 40-inch screen size in my living room a while back but, as you say, it doesn't give much of a feel for how the set will actually look. I'd like to get a bigger screen but I don't think it'll happen in the near future.

Ad, you'd be well impressed seeing my 26 inch 720p screen placed in the corner of my living room  .

Well I did suggest putting it on the wall ("but then we won't be able to see it from one of the sofas") and moving the furniture around ("I don't want to") but *cough* we *cough* decided not to. :simper:

People working in stores like John Lewis and Currys wearing a manufacturer branded shirt are not employees of either retail store.

The manufacturer hires a 3rd party brand ambassador company and trains them to have a lot of product knowledge on their brand of products.

They don't earn commission. Their job is to help sell more of their manufacturers TV/cameras/whatever by being able to train retail staff and demonstrate products to customers and answer the harder questions some customers have and just approach people asking if they need help/advice etc.

Another Sony/Android related firmware irritation today. Watching the France game and the info input banner is locked to the top of the screen.

Tried changing inputs and it’s still locked, the new input just overlaying onto the locked one.

Tried turning it on and off, also nothing.

Tried unplugging it from the mains and waiting 30 seconds. Still there.

Now unplugged it and will wait 10 minutes.

Mine has an issue with my also Sony Bluray player, every time I pause something then resume playback the TV decides to switch to a different HDMI input which then makes the soundbar go into standby mode.

My soundbar is ridiculously temperamental though, it has major issues with the TV and will only work when connected via optical cable, HDMI passthrough (ARC) worked great on my previous Panasonic TV but simply doesn't work with the Sony.

Had to do a factory reset of my TV. Fine now, thankfully. Hopefully this particular bug doesn’t resurface and Sony are aware of it.

Is there any way to force a firmware update on Sony Bravia TVs?

I still haven't seen any sign of the most recent update and I'd quite to see if it fixes the performance issues.

In Settings you can check to see if there is an update available for the TV if it isn't set to receive them automatically.

I've not had a problem with ARC. It switches between Sky+ & the PS4 Pro via the soundbar with no issues. The Wireless Bass sometimes disconnects but that's solved just by turning it on and off again. What the TV doesn't do however is correctly switch modes (Cinema Home and Game mode). So I'll switch from Sky+ to the PS4 but it'll still be on Cinema. And then when I go back again it'll still be on Game.

The soundbar manual is very in-depth though, and setting all the menus up properly and reading everything was quite laborious. Thankfully I made a note of every single setting.

I like to think having everything as the same brand helps in stopping compatibility issues, but probably makes no difference.
