Sony XE93 now setup and working fine with no dead pixels but now my soundbar refuses to work.

Tried both the HDMI and optical connections to no avail and am now trawling through the hefty user manual to see if I've not overlooked something simple.

Have you turned off the TV speakers and told it to use Audio System in the TV settings? My parents Sony TV needs that to use their sound bar and mine needs it to use my 5.1 system. Sony TVs will only output sound to one or the other, not both.

I've tried turning off the TV speakers and had a look to see if you have to select the optical out manually but still can't get it working.

I'll have to look for the instruction manual for the soundbar tomorrow.

Got my LG SG800 set up at the weekend. Loved it so far, though not managed to do much gaming on it yet. 1080p stuff looks really good on it though, so I'm pleased with that. Watched Lilo and Stitch on BluRay and it looks phenomenal.

One annoying thing is that I've got my Sky Q box, PSD4 and Switch running into my Onkyo surround amp, then with an ARC to the TV, but I've just realised I won't be able to keep that as the Amp is hdmi 1.4, so doesn't support HDR. Admittedly, I've only got two PS4 games that appear to support HDR at the moment, but still, I'd like to see it in action.

Luckily the TV has 4 hdmis so they can all run into it directly, and I can use the ARC hdmi for audio only, but still, it's a bit annoying. Everything is very neat at the moment.

Ad7 regret

Can you even get a 65"+ in OLED? That's why I went with LED.

Yes you can. Expensive though. You can get 77" but they're strawberry floating outrageously so.

and after The CES - you can get an 88".

Will be interesting to see what manufactures come out with at CES this week for the year ahead. Sony's conference is later today, and Samsung has already announced MicroLED - though by the sounds of it we won't be seeing it on normal TVs for a number of years yet:

MicroLED (also referred to as micro-LED, mLED, and µLED) is a technology that shrinks traditional LEDs to a smaller size, and gives them the ability to produce their own light. Think OLED, but take out the organic part.

MicroLED doesn’t require a discrete backlight, and there’s no need for LCD shutters. In turn, this creates a brighter, more contrast-rich television that can turn pixels off individually.

When pressed about the differences between OLED and MicroLED, one Samsung spokesperson after another had the same response: MicroLED has all of the things you love about OLED with none of the tradeoffs.

Specifically, what Samsung is trying to impress on journalists at CES is that the TV has no problem with contrast or black levels, and yet retains the bright, high dynamic range-friendly whites of traditional LED screens.

Of course, OLED's other issue – as with plasma TVs before it – is image burn-in. According to Samsung, because the The Wall uses a non-organic substrate, it should never have that problem. Ever.

But perhaps the neatest feature of MicroLED is that The Wall can be connected to other identical models to form an even bigger screen – if 146 inches wasn’t already enough for you. According to Samsung, there’s currently no limit to the size of the modular TV you can create, and although signal degradation will occur at a certain point, the spokespeople we talked to said they haven’t seen that happen yet.

When the Samsung guy in the above post says "MicroLED has all of the things you love about OLED with none of the tradeoffs." What are the trade offs?

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

The roll up OLED that's on show is nice but all kinds of pointless.

When I imagine a foldable screen I imagine something like a small screen you can fold up and act as a traditional newspaper but with the ability to have video so about tabloid size. You could also have screens on sweatbands for fitness fans.

Black levels and refresh rates aren't as good on LED/LCD screens as on OLED. Even the best LED/LCD sets tend to smear/blur slightly during fast moving images, and some will leave a faint black trail (as the Sony XE94 does currently, though this has become more uncommon in recent years).

OLED screens however aren't as bright as LED/LCD screens, are more likely to suffer from image retention, and degrade at a faster rate (though how much faster is up for debate).
