Agreed. My TV which you saw is Panasonic, chuffed to bits with it and no complaints.

Thanks guys. I had Panasonic down as the best of the rest, but I'm sure that one of the ones I was looking at earlier had quite a few reviews saying the TV kept randomly turning off and was a known problem.

Would I be better off waiting until the post-Christmas sales? I thought I'd be better off looking now but it seems not based on what I've seen so far.

Anyone know if I can share video from my PC to my Samsung smart TV without the use of the Smart View software? The TV can see my PC and others on the same network just fine, but it says 'No Content Found'. I have plenty of stuff shared and can view it from my laptop.

Figured that out. I had to unblock the TV in Windows. Ok.

But there are some files and folders that the TV can't see for some reason.

Yep. Folders containing .mkv files do not show up. But if f I use the Smart View software I can play those just fine. That's weird and more than a little annoying, I'd rather not have to use Smart View because it doesn't keep the folder structure when I view the files on the TV but just dumps them all on the same screen.

One further weird thing: If I place .mkv files on a USB drive and plug that into the TV it'll read them just fine. What.

Weird thing nr. 3: I can only change the audio language of the video while it's playing. I can access the option to change it while it's paused but it doesn't do anything.

Run Plex on your PC and point it at your Media. Should be able to then pick it up on the TV without any problems.

Went with Kodi instead actually because hey, that doesn't require me to create an account for local video streaming.
But... it doesn't run minimized. Guess it's made for more of a dedicated media server.

Also I can't see every .mkv in my library with Kodi.

It's just such a stupid situation. The TV is perfectly capable of playing these files, but it refuses to show them on the network.

---

Alright, created an account with Plex... for local video streaming. Bullshit, but at least it works now.

Thanks for the tip.

I've been considering upgrading to 4k for a while now and have had my eye on the highly regarded Samsung 48JU7000 which is imminently coming off the shelves for the 2016 replacement KU series, which there is currently minimal information about, let alone reviews.

The JU7000 is currently around £800 which is really the most I can pay at the moment, but with HDR tech seemingly becoming the future I'm wondering if I should hold out a while longer and get one with that feature after the prices drop a bit.

I've been reading up on HDR and it certainly looks like the image difference will be vast, but will this only be the case when using HDR quality sources? Would having an HDR tv make any difference at all when watching non HDR formatted content?

Thought I'd mentioned this before, but I never created an account for local streaming. I guess it might depend on the version of the app you are using on whatever device you are doing playback on.

Doesn't really fix the issue. I still would have had to create an account.
It's not like it was a huge inconvenience or anything, just a minor thing that's incredibly stupid for no reason.

Hi guys I'm thinking it's time to replace my old 360 era HD TV. It's a panasonic and served me well but I want something bigger. The Sony KDL40W705C 40 Inch Full HD Freeview HD Smart TV is currently 480 euros in Argos and looks sweet. Any other model I should consider? It's mainly for gaming, netflix, and Sky.

If you look around you may be able to get a cheap 4K screen for a similar price.

I know Samsung TVs have been good in previous years, not sure about this years or last years TVs though.

Seems the best place to post this.
I'm off to Richer Sounds today to possibly buy a new AV unit. My current one is a 6 year old Onkyo which doesn't support 4K or HDCP 2.2, which with the release of Sky 4K and upcoming 4K consoles is going to render it pretty useless.

One I've had recommended to me is the Yamaha RXV679. I'm also considering the Sony STRDN860, along with the 1060 (though I can't really see much difference between them).

Anybody got either of those? Or any other recommendations?

I think the main difference seems to be that the 1060 has the 2nd hdmi out so you can have a second zone. I don't own either, however I do own the slightly older 1050 model and have done for just less than 2 years and so far I've found it absolutely fantastic, really easy to use, great interface, sound quality great with lots of options and I find the Zone 2 feature really useful as I have two long HDMI cables running under the carpet meaning my desktop PC can be used on the front room TV and I can use all my consoles on my monitor. I've not tried the 4K upscaling on it as I don't own a 4K TV currently but I've heard good things and can imagine its only improved on the 1060.

The second HDMI output isn't really something I'm bothered about having, certainly not worth paying extra for. My PC is upstairs whilst the TV is downstairs so I don't think I'd ever have a use for the second output in the foreseeable future.

I think the downside with either of them though is that I'll also need to buy an Active Subwoofer, my current one is un-powered/passive. Looking at Richer Sounds website I'm looking at the Yamaha YSTFSW050. I'd prefer it to be taller rather than wider, but given that the first upright one is £30 more expensive I can live with it. Maybe they'll cut me a deal or something in store.
At least I don't need to buy new speakers, my current ones seem absolutely fine so the only way I'd see any improvement is probably if I spent a fortune on them for Atmos or something (which would also require a bigger investment on the AV unit)

EDIT - Reading through some reviews of the Sony units, both of them only support HDCP 2.2 on one of the inputs, whilst with the Yamaha you get support on three of the inputs. Given that I've potentially got 3 4K sources coming (Sky, PS Neo and Xbox Scorpio) then one input seems pretty poor.

Bought the Yamaha 679. Still need a subwoofer, but the cheapest they had in store was about £170, more than I'd want to spend really, so will probably buy a sub online.

I'm looking for a 40 inch minimum HDTV, possibly smart TV. Budget of £200-£250.

Any suggestions?

Also are the cheaper brand TV's, such as Hisense, worth buying?

I've found the following:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-TX-2 ... ords=hd+tv

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sharp-LC-40CFF ... ords=hd+tv

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-and-hom ... 4-pdt.html

Top brand 40" TVs are so cheap it's kind of pointless going with budget brands unless, along with a cheaper price, they also offer substantially better features/picture quality.

I'd also stay away from Sharp and JVC. Stick with Panny, Sammy or Sony.
