For the first time in my life I've decided to buy a flagship TV. I think I've settled on the brand (Sony) but I may hold off to see what they announce at CES in January. It's going to cost around £1800 factoring in the sound bar so I want to get it right.

Current complaints about the Sony are response times for gaming (which Sony used to be great at but this year it has shot right up) and, while improved, Android still isn't quite right. There has also been that issue with SkyQ.

I'll be buying it from John Lewis as their 5 year guarantee is a must.

Samsung has been such a disaster for me over the years. Everything has gone wrong - from TVs to microwaves. Either I'm unlucky or their build quality is really bad.

Not that I'm aware of; maybe in Sony Centres? I've noticed Sony's high end TVs aren't stocked in a lot of places though. Nothing from Argos, AO or Amazon. Shops tend to favour Samsung and LG (particularly Currys). Hisense has also popped up in the last few years.

Sony have 5 tiers of 4K HDR: budget, which is on Amazon and end up at around £700; the next one up gets you the premium design without the gold trim at around £1200; then Gold trim at £1700ish; then the best high street model at £4000 but sizes start at 65 which is too big for me; and finally the silly model which only David Beckham can afford.

If you are going to spend that much on a TV have you considered not buying a sound bar and getting something better instead?

I like to go loud on occasion (though not as bad as my Dad, who must have blown out in excess of 15 speakers over the years because apparently you just can't be sensible when listening to AC/DC) but having a 5 or 7 set-up would probably be overkill for my living room. Room shaking bass would be great but being in a semi-detached I'd annoy the neighbours. Thin walls in 1900-era homes unfortunately.

Noticed someone on social media bragging that they've just bought a new 4K TV for almost 2 grand. So I decided to look it up...

..it launched in late 2013. Bet that shop is laughing their arse off.

No. Picture's crap when viewed from an angle other than straight on. Generally the picture is slightly skewed anyway from how directors envisaged their movie. No-one has ever said 'well this film looks alright but imagine it on a curved screen!'

They look stylish as strawberry float but it's all about the picture for me.

Vast cinema screens need to be curved because of the scales involved. Living rooms TV screens do not.

Curved TVs have always struck me as an attempt to do something different for the sake of it.

Yeah but imagine how much nicer it would look on a 65" 4K flat screen. :datass:

Richer sounds has a good selection of Sony TVs and all their sets come with a 6 year guarantee, their prices are very competitive too.

Would love to know the difference between these 2 TV's from Sony; the 55XD8577/8599 (Silver/Black) at £1,149: http://www.johnlewis.com/sony-bravia-55 ... our=Silver and the slightly cheaper 55XD8005 at £1000: http://www.johnlewis.com/sony-bravia-55 ... n/p2991371. They look identical.

I can't find any reviews of these models either (which sit under the flagship 55XD9305 at £1599).

It would be nice to see how they compare with the Slim Backlight Drive removed.

The more expensive one uses more power.
