Just had a quick Google on the Sky Sports graphics/OLED and noticed there's a hefty thread on the Sky forums:

http://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Sky-Q/LG-OL ... -p/2682213

They, and Currys, say it is not covered under the warranty, they say I have misused the TV by watching Sky News too much. I'm in the process of taking Currys to the small claims court.

Yes it was an expensive one £3k.

See this is the big issue. Blaming a customer for watching too much of something or playing something too much. You should be allowed to watch or play something for how long you want without worrying about this sort of stuff happening especially after paying £3000 for it.

I didn’t realise watching TV on a TV counted as misusing a TV.

Wow that's serious burn in! :dread:

I got a Panasonic 55" CR852 for £300 from a friend. Was planning to get the Samsung MU8000 55" for about £1500.

The Panasonic doesn't respect file libraries when plugging in USB hard drive. It's not alphabetical and sub folders show up as if they weren't subfolders but their own folders.

BBC website shows it as a compatible TV for Blue Planet 2 4k HDR but Xbox One S disagrees.

Definitely happy overall and the picture is fantastic, we're in a strange TV transition period. OLED is the future but it's got early adopter issues and it seems like whilst 4k is unified now, HDR standards still aren't.

I don't know if this is an inherent problem with the technology itself or whether it's something than can be, if not rectified, the risks substantially reduced over time. If it's happening on the LG - which is where the majority of complaints seem to be coming from - then I can't see why it also wouldn't be happening on the Sony A1.

There have also been a number of reports of image retention on both the iPhone X and Google Pixel 2: https://www.cnet.com/news/apple-iphone- ... ixel-2-xl/. On Apple's support page for the X:

If you look at an OLED display off-angle, you might notice slight shifts in color and hue. This is a characteristic of OLED and is normal behavior. With extended long-term use, OLED displays can also show slight visual changes. This is also expected behavior and can include “image persistence” or “burn-in,” where the display shows a faint remnant of an image even after a new image appears on the screen. This can occur in more extreme cases such as when the same high contrast image is continuously displayed for prolonged periods of time. We’ve engineered the Super Retina display to be the best in the industry in reducing the effects of OLED "burn-in."

With iOS 11, iPhone X is specially designed to minimize the effects of long-term use and extend the viewing life of the Super Retina display.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208191

Maybe if you're on a 24 month contract and you replace your phone it's not too bad, but if you've bought it outright or like a TV, plan to have it for 5+ years, it's not great news.

Just had to ring John Lewis customer support after switching the TV on last night to be greeted by this lovely line up of stuck pixels:

Image

They said they'll replace it but I'll have to wait until they get more in stock. Not exactly a promising sign after two days of use.

Edit: I think I'm going to exchange it for the equivalent non OLED version as I'm unhappy spending nearly £1500 on a TV with potential reliability issues.

I'll still get the 4K experience but OLED just isn't worth the hassle yet.

Unlucky. If it's any consolation, anecdotally it's been a terrible year for TV related faults across all of the major manufacturers.

At least it's not happened over the Christmas period.

As a side note, Netflix's 4K offerings are utterly piss poor and I won't be continuing my top tier subscription.

John Lewis tend to be good at dealing with these situations.

Do you know what caused it?

I went for OLED over LED because I assumed it was better. This thread has me worried.

No idea what caused it, was completely fine during setup (wednesday night) and yesterday but last night I switched it on and immediately noticed the line of pixels.

it briefly returned to normal this afternoon but the line is back again now and I think I can see another extremely faint one on the other side of the screen. I thought it could it be something stupid like a loose HDMI cable but it was the same with Netflix and terrestrial TV so seems unlikely.

I'm in two minds about swapping it for a cheaper non OLED screen but I suspect that I've made the sensible choice in the long run.

Set my Samsung 55MU7000 up last night. Love it, brilliant tv. The only negatives I had read where of poor viewing angles as it uses a VA panel so I was really concerned as I was expecting it to be unviewable like old LCD monitors were when they first come out if you stand to the side, especially as I read one review that said if you aren’t going to be sitting directly in front of the tv then this isn’t the tv for you. However I can only assume that some reviewers have eyesight problems because this tv is great and I don’t know what they are talking about. I think some ‘experts’ are just too snobby when it comes to technology.

Also trying to get to grips with the new ‘one’ Remote that comes with it. It is even fully compatible with SKY which I find amazing but it works very differently to a normal remote so it can be confusing. Luckily it still came with an old school remote as well.

From a visual and motion perspective, it definitely is, but taken overall it depends what you're using it for. What may be great for movies may not be so great for Sky Sports News! OLED owners can be categorical with the fact they have the very best picture quality available today though.

If you were to swap to LCD, I'd probably avoid LG. At the top end they're not rubbish by any means, but you can get better performance for the money from Samsung and Sony.

I agree. I initially bought an LG led last year for one of my rooms and the SD picture was terrible. Swapped it for a Samsung and that was so much better.

Is that really much of a problem if you don't live in a pub that has Sky Sports news on all day?

Can someone please explain sound bars to me. I’ve never purchased or used one, so I’m trying to figure out if I need one. I’m finding that with the speakers on the back of my new tv and due to the size of my room I’m having to turn the tv up a fair bit to hear it. Is the idea of sound bars so make the audio direction forward facing and thus you don’t have to turn the sound up so loudly? I have no problem with the quality of the sound coming from the tv.

Sound bars basically offer bigger, better quality speakers, and usually more of them spaced further apart, than the TV itself can provide. Most sound bars also come with a separate box that you place somewhere else in the room that provides the Bass. The sound from the TVs internal speakers are turned off. Sound bars are connected either through a HDMI port (commonly HDMI ARC) or a optic cable. If using HDMI, you will need one that can accept a 4K and HDR feed, and has enough HDMI ports (all your equipment such as Xbox or Sky box will plug into the sound bar instead of the TV).

Sound bars are good for those that don’t wish to place separate speakers around their room, don’t have the space, or require the levels of sound a full 5 or 7 speaker set up would provide. The separate unit that provides the Bass however is identical.

Some of the latest sound bars support Dolby Atmos, and have speakers that will effectively fire the audio off the ceiling and surrounding walls, supposedly recreating that full audio experience you’d usually associate with surround sound. So not only will you have the standard front facing speakers, they’re also on the top of the unit.

In my experience sound bars can match the audio quality and bass of a surround sound set up, but can’t properly recreate that ‘a plane has just flown over my head’ feeling you’d get by placing a physical speaker behind you.

I had arranged to exchange the TV for the cheaper LG 55SJ850V but now I really don't know whether to go ahead with that or ring JL yet again and just swap it for the same model and take my chances with the potential screen burn issues.
