Had my graduation today, was great meeting up with some friends again, but some people from my course wanted to do the ol' hat toss for a picture. Everyone throws their hats in the air, the wind blows gooseberry fool, what I think was my hat ends up nailing my friend on the head. Idek if I took the same hat after, but he went to the loo and found his head was bleeding a little. He stuck around for the reception and buffet, but right now he's sitting in A&E to see if he needs stitches.

Moral of the story kids, don't throw your hats on graduation day.

I'm sorry for your friend, but why did they feel the need to go to A&E? Did they seriously fear concussion from a mortarboard? Would the cut not stop bleeding even after holding a wad of tissues over it? Maybe I'm missing something but it sounds like it needn't have ruined their day...!

*shrugs* He's getting gel stitches tho. He has a bad case of paranoia at times so maybe that's why he went. Feel gooseberry fool for ruining the day tho

Fair. Sorry if I was being nosy, just seemed a bit weird to me. Don't blame yourself anyway -- gooseberry fool happens!

The number one skill you need is searching the internet. Stack overflow will become a good friend. Be continuously optimising your process so you don't waste time doing things that aren't thinking. Automate where you can. Always write tests. Write code for readability and maintainability, not brevity. Stay tidy and organised.

Good luck!

Karl wrote:It's hard to give specific advice without knowing the tech you're working with, but a large part of good programming is all about documentation. The "why I'm doing this" should appear in comments, and the "how I'm doing this" should be readable via your choice of variable and function names. Every time you start coding a new task, pop it in a function or a subroutine and name it descriptively.

If you do this you've made a big step towards coding in a way that's easy to read, test, and reuse. :)

Thanks for the encouragement, I'm a bit nervous about it all but I'm hoping that I'll be able to learn quickly enough. The training at the job seems very thorough as well

Well. This is a little awkward. The contract for my job offer came through and after going through it with a fine tooth comb it clearly isn't what I thought I was signing up for. Some real nasty clauses in the contract including some serious clawbacks if you leave before 24 months (£5000 fine for doing so) and it's clear that no time is actually spent in Java or C as initially advertised. Rather it's all in their in house language, kdb+ - which is a bit of a snag as it's very niche, but there's also a clause in the contract stating that if you leave the company, you may not work as a kdb+ engineer for a period of 12 months

So yeah. Rejecting it after all that. The job search continues

Ended up having a trip to A&E last night because I'd fainted and possibly had a fit just as I was going to bed. Stood up, stretched, felt a bit lightheaded but didn't think anything of it, started to walk off and next thing I know I'm on the floor with both my parents sat over me, apparently I'd been jerking around and my eyes were fluttering and rolling up. All the blood tests and that came back normal so it's looking like it was just a random one-off but I've been told not to drive or cycle until my follow-up appointment and to limit external stimuli (so games, telly, computer work) for at least the next couple of days, which is an arse because I've got an essay due for Tuesday as well as a job interview the same day that I have to prepare a presentation for. Hopefully be able to get an extension for the essay but still not ideal because I really need to get it out of the way to focus on my dissertation (which is yet more computer work, rip). Plus the fact that that takes away pretty much everything I do for leisure as well - no Monster Hunter for a while and probably going to have to sit out on Avengers too until I've had my follow-up :(
Feel absolutely fine now luckily apart from being a bit shaken by the whole thing, but now I've got my parents treating me like I'm made of glass which isn't great because I *hate* being fussed over. Probably a good job I'm headed back to uni tomorrow so I can just get on with things without them checking on me every five seconds.

Took the new camera out for a proper test today, really pleased with the performance so far, the image quality is miles better than the old camera and the video function is working really well too.
