Bleachyleachy wrote:Well. This is a little awkward. The contract for my job offer came through and after going through it with a fine tooth comb it clearly isn't what I thought I was signing up for. Some real nasty clauses in the contract including some serious clawbacks if you leave before 24 months (£5000 fine for doing so) and it's clear that no time is actually spent in Java or C as initially advertised. Rather it's all in their in house language, kdb+ - which is a bit of a snag as it's very niche, but there's also a clause in the contract stating that if you leave the company, you may not work as a kdb+ engineer for a period of 12 months

So yeah. Rejecting it after all that. The job search continues

As far as I know that is almost unenforceable, they would have to take you to court and jump through so many hurdles it would likely be not worth it for them. Most places Ive worked had clauses like that in their contracts but Ive never heard of them enforcing it when someone leaves.

I'll remember that for the future, but regardless, the job just doesn't look like it's for me after all

And happy birthday to OR :toot:

I think this is the right call. If they try and strawberry float you about in the contract before you’ve even signed up and started working there they are probably an utter nightmare to actually work for.

Stood up, stretched, felt a bit lightheaded but didn't think anything of it, started to walk off and next thing I know I'm on the floor with both my parents sat over me, apparently I'd been jerking around and my eyes were fluttering and rolling up. All the blood tests and that came back normal so it's looking like it was just a random one-off but I've been told not to drive or cycle until my follow-up appointment and to limit external stimuli (so games, telly, computer work) for at least the next couple of days, which is an arse because I've got an essay due for Tuesday as well as a job interview the same day that I have to prepare a presentation for. Hopefully be able to get an extension for the essay but still not ideal because I really need to get it out of the way to focus on my dissertation (which is yet more computer work, rip). Plus the fact that that takes away pretty much everything I do for leisure as well - no Monster Hunter for a while and probably going to have to sit out on Avengers too until I've had my follow-up :(
Feel absolutely fine now luckily apart from being a bit shaken by the whole thing, but now I've got my parents treating me like I'm made of glass which isn't great because I *hate* being fussed over. Probably a good job I'm headed back to uni tomorrow so I can just get on with things without them checking on me every five seconds.

Sounds like a scary episode, glad you're feeling better now though!

No you see, it's us pesky millenials that need to learn to empathise with people who just don't do computers

Same, I put it down to doing codey stuff that means doing lots of irregular characters so never really hit a groove.

If I'm doing documentation I'll come close to it but never fully get there.

Thankfully word has a pretty good spelling and gooseberry fool checker to catch Errkalisms.

I found my 'touch-typing' skills developed naturally when I was in my early teens as I made more of an effort to just not look at the keyboard. I never learned formally how to do it.

I can type very quickly but only my left hand 'touch-types' properly (with all the fingers); my right hand actually darts around the right-hand-side of the keyboard poking keys with my index finger. Weird how that difference developed -- the only reason I can come up with is because the right hand is always moving between the mouse and keyboard, whereas my left hand rests on the keyboard all the time?

Obviously I don't think about that consciously at all, typing is second-nature now, but it was amusing when I first noticed what I was doing.

Learning Dvorak pretty much forced me to learn how to touch-type properly, since you can't hunt-and-peck without relabelling your keys, and I chose not to. It actually ended up improving my QWERTY typing, as I learnt good habits from Dvorak and carried them over. Now I type both ways.

I did have typing lessons but never really got the hang of touch typing so gradually reverted to my own style of typing with one hand.

Nowadays though I use an onscreen keyboard as my hand strength has deteriorated too much to type.

I just gradually learnt to touch type through using computers a lot, when I was working as an admin I was constantly having to type stuff out, and considering that I didn't have a pc or laptop of my own till I was 21 I'm quite pleased with how fast I type now.

Does voice typing work for you? It is pretty accurate front what I have seen on 10 and if you use Edge will auto launch for text boxes and junk in if you put the pc in tablet mode.
