I've had some success with home recovery solutions, but it can be patchy and yes that is the sort of thing that may not be sensible to let a friend take a bash at!
Are you on Windows, Mac or Linux? I've found that using a Linux based platform, or just a Linux recovery disk, can have more success at talking to a dead drive than Windows.
