I came across this phrase while buying my beautiful new earphones. Apparently they sound better after having been played for a while. Does any one know anything about this?

EDIT. after doing some research after Akai's post, it is real. Likened to breaking in a new pair of shoes. I suppose it does make sense after all :fp: I'm in 3rd year of an Audio Tech. course as well :shifty:

Is true.

When I bought my Grados they told me about this... After using them for a few days they certainly sounded better than when I first got them.

Plus a friend is a audio-freak, he says 'Is true'. So, is true.

So saturday morning. Leave em playing all day.

Lovely stuff.

I will review them as best i can next week for anyone that gives a hoot.

Burning them in with a variety of noise rather than just music works best. This is because the noise goes across the frequency spectrum and power distribution spectrum. Personally I use a variety of Pink Noise (Pink noise works mainly across the spectrum where most human hearing occurs, it's often used as a reference signal because of that) and Brown Noise (Brown noise works really well because it is basically a random walk so covers the spectrum well again) when I'm burning new headphones or speakers in. I upload the .wav file that I use here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WQR8U9H0. If you want to use that then dl that and just leave it on a loop for however many hours. Unless you've got a good ear I don't know if you'll notice too much of an improvement from burning in earphones, but it does help.

It makes sense to me. Any inherent stiffness in the materials at the points where they're required to move would be loosened away.
