help burning AVI files to dvd

I bought a new samsung smx-k40 camcorder last week but i can't figure out how to burn the files to a dvd. I have several dvd burning softwares on my laptop yet none seem to recognise the files. I believe the files are recorded in AVI. Should i try to convert the files to something else or is there some software that i can use to burn it to a disc. I'm pretty sure that my dvd player can play avi so that shouldn't be a problem.
