Ths is a call for help to all you PC techies  .

You may recall that a few weeks ago I sought help on a PC issue and... well, it's got worse and I've told my pal that I'll pop over and "fix" it on Saturday :dread: . I'll try and keep this as simple as possible:

Background
> My pal has a desktop PC that is around five years or so old
> It came installed with Windows 7
> It has been upgraded, as part of the MS free upgrade offer, to run Windows 10

The problem
> The Windows 10 start button doesn't work
> The task bar sometimes disappears
> Most apps lock up after running for a while
> There are tons of daft installation issues i.e. he has installed three versions of MS office, two different anti-virus products etc :fp:
> I can't run Windows Update because I can't access the option via the Start button

Things I've tried so far
> I've tried a couple of things including:
a) Accessing Powershell and running sfc / scannow ; no errors were reported
b) Running this "reinstall Windows Apps" command in the Powershell -
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
- it didn't recognise the instruction

Possible solution?
> I'm thinking that we'll need to "restore" the PC and re-load on all the software / apps. I believe I could do this by running "Refresh":
As a last resort, you can ‘refresh’ your Windows 10 installation, which is much the same as reinstalling the operating system. Your documents won’t be affected, but you’ll need to reinstall any applications that aren’t part of Windows.

1. Restart Windows in Troubleshooting mode

Close any open applications and press the [Windows] + [L] keys to log out of your Windows account — or just restart Windows. On the login screen, click the Power icon at the bottom right, hold down the [Shift] key and select the Restart option.

2. Reset your PC

When the blue Choose an option screen appears, click Troubleshoot, followed by Reset this PC. finally, click the Keep my files option and follow the on-screen instructions.

>>> Is this the best way forward or am I missing something daft? <<<

I know this is lengthy... I'd be really grateful for any thoughts or guidance. Thanks  .

"two different anti-virus products"

That'll do it

(Trying to) run more than one AV is probably going to mess windows up royally

Yeah, I'd be thinking the same as you in that situation and just restore the whole thing. Might be worth grabbing any vitally important files beforehand if you can.

Agreed with the two above posts. Reformat the thing to stock W10 and tell him to stop installing unnecessary antivirus programs.

Problem resolved :toot: .

> Backed up the personal data (machine froze three times whilst saving the data :x )
> Restored Windows 10 (this was a right game as it wouldn't let me access restore option; eventually I found out about restarting the machine whilst holding the shift key!)
> All software reloaded and setup

It only took just under eight hours :toot: . ( :dread: ).
