Why not? with the better policing and a change in the dynamics of the footballing fan base we now have, a Hillsborough type event is very unlikely to occur. By unlikely, I mean near impossible. In the bundesliga they have standing terraces and don't appear to have any trouble (may be wrong). If you've ever been to a proper football ground like Chesterfield's and Swindon's they still have very small terraced stands and whenever I have stood in them there has never been a problem. I feel quite strongly that terraces should be brought back, not wholesale of course, but maybe a few blocks in one stand where fans who want to stand can. All you do is rip the old seats out but keep the same number of fans, so if a block hold 1,000 seated fans, 1,000 can stand there simple.
It would be very unlikely to see a group of thugs go up mob handed, ticketless and try and force there way into games now-a-days, its just not the culture.

Nonsense. It wasn't the terracing that was the problem, it's the fencing and enclosures. Terracing is perfectly safe as long as it's efficiently managed with regards to safety, and that people use some sort of common sense; I've got a preferred spot on the terrace at Yeovil's Huish Park ground, just behind the uppermost barrier, pretty much central in the stand. But if it's extremely busy (which fortunately it hasn't been in recent seasons), I'll stand somewhere else. I don't like forgoing my usual spot, but if it means I'll be able to have some sort of space, I will.

Terraces are not the problem and are still used today in lower leagues and abroad in many top flight divisions.

Also take Wembley for example, it hosts music events which have large standing contingents, and these are hosted all the time without incident. It really makes no sense that if the same venue can't have a standing for a similar event on safety grounds.

Oh dear, seems this Liverpool reserve keeper totally failed to grasp the full implications of the day :fp:

Watching the video of him acting the tool it makes me laugh when the player he is nudging is looking at him with disbelief as if to say WTF!!

For an employee of the club in question to do that is pretty stupid. He has deservedly been suspended.

Had it been anyone else nothing would have happened.

Les Lawson, secretary of the Merseyside branch of the official Liverpool Supporters' Club, said: "I think he should be sacked.

"There is no excuse for not showing respect to the 96 supporters.

"It was a sombre occasion and for him to do what he was doing was a total and utter disgrace.

"It's good that Liverpool Football Club have acted quickly and suspended him but I don't think he should ever set foot in the club again."

That isn't over-reacting?

Wait a sec, wasn't the whole incident the fault of the Liverpool fans?

Okay.. Well I don't know much about it but a guy at work said that the 'Pool fans had a reputation for crowding around the entrances to stands, at the time, and used to just force themselves in.. 96 fans die after being crushed. Doesn't seem like they can have anyone to blame but themselves, really.

Just look back through the thread. We've been through all this. FWIW, I agree, but many don't.

Someone who isn't an employee of the club.

With the exception of the last line, not in the slightest. This doesn't really concern you or anyone else not connected with the club though does it?

Yes, because nothing official has ever been biased towards public opinion, has it?

Oh I remember you're a Pool fan too. Coincidence?
