PostHillsborough - Twenty years on
by Mommy Christmas » Wed Apr 15, 2009 10:52 am

I remember watching the build up of this vividly. I was 17 and looking forward to the game but prior to kick the commentators were saying that there was trouble at the Leppings lane end of the ground. It became evident that something bad was happening with Liverpool fans desperately trying to get onto the upper tier.
I also remember forest fans running towards the liverpool fans, not to fight but to help, ripping down advertising hoardings to use as stretchers. Stuff like that stays with you.
After that day football changed forever.

What are your memories of the 15th April 1989?

I was 8 at the time and happened to be at the local football club.

I remember people around me saying someone had died and how shocking that was. At the time, I couldn't understand how someone could die at a game of football. As the day went on, I just remember people saying that the numbers of people dying was rising through out the day.

Everyone was glued to the TV.

Very sad indeed.

Very sad but people need to move on FFS!

I am damn sure a good proportion of those 96 families just want to put it to bed and get on with their lives, but some of them seem to have made a living out of not letting it rest.

Yes, errors were made but is a witch-hunt necessary? How would it change anything by finding one or two people to pin the blame of 96 deaths on?

I am sick to death of hearing about this and how Liverpool fans seem to get away with blaming the police for their actions.

Couldn't agree more. It was obviously a tragedy, but there were many things to blame: the crap policing and stewarding, the late arriving fans rushing in, and obviously the fences on the terracing.

It was a day which killed football though, the aftermath of Hillsborough and the Taylor Report totally changing the face of the sport for the worst.

Sorry about that mate, but it just gets on my tits, especially the fact that it could have been avoided had people not tried to push and shove their way into the ground. The fans got desperate as kick off approached.

The people that managed to get to the stadium on time (families) were at the front and many of them were killed because of the latecomers pushing and shunting their way into the stadium.

Obviously they had no idea of the consequences of their actions - it was a giant strawberry float up but I find it outrageous that this is never mentioned. They just want to pin the blame on a few coppers who were trying to control 1000's and 1000's of people.

Fair enough then. I was actually looking forward to comparing peoples reactions to the tradegy as it was horrible to watch and hear about what happened. We should never forget it, no matter what club it is, show some respect FFS.

I don’t think it changed it for the worse. I have been going to football all my life and have seen well over 1000 live matches in the 25 years I’ve been going to watch football (majority of them Arsenal of course).

My experience of Liverpool Football Club and their fans is not a good one and lets not forget the common denominator of the Hillsborough disaster and the Heysel disaster is the actions of Liverpool fans. Again overlooked by many who claim to be searching for answers.

I bet you've forgotten dozens (hundreds?) of other tragedies of a similar nature.

Not to put too fine a point on it - 96 people isn't that many.

So why is this one so special? Why has it become so ingrained in Liverpool/Football Fans identity?

(Edit - I'm not trying to be aggravating. I'm genuinely curious)

It's painful when someone starts to talk a bit of sense regarding Hillsborough isn't it.

Do you hear how many people die in Africa watching football due to crappy stadiums or die in stampedes all in the name of religion? It's ridiculous how many people die when it can be so easily avoided but people never learn from what happens.

And pointing out some cold hard facts is not a lack of respect. People need to be reminded that the blame for this shouldn't be pinned on a couple of poor coppers!

I was two months away from being born when the disaster happened, but everyone knows about it.

It made me cry my eyes out when I was 15. Its special to me ok, I still well up when It's talked about. I shouldn't have to explain why it effects me to some moron who goes by the 'numbers' of people killed.
:|

EDIT: Why are people going on about the coppers and the justice malarky? The thread is about the tragedy and peoples memories. :?

How do you feel about the people who died at Heysel? The same I presume, or not?

How can their be a topic about memories? Do you want me to point out my favourite corpse or something?

Back then I was angry about what I saw and I am even more angry now that people overlook the facts and continue to try to pin the blame on someone.

Sky News had an interview with a woman who lived about a mile from the ground and she said she was amazed how many Liverpool fans were casually walking to the ground as if they had all the time in the world even thought it was about 10-15 mins from kick off.

Could those people have been the ones pushing and shoving their way in?

Sky seems to have conveniently pulled this piece from their website due to angry Liverpool fans trying to contradict what she was saying.
