There's a lot of warnings floating around on social media to be careful about what you say in case it might affect proceedings as those charged have a right to fair trial. I'm not 100% sure how that affects what I can and can't say here but I'll just ask people to try and keep a cool head.

TBH, my head was hurting trying to think of the contempt of court implications.

Once charges have been brought, you're not even meant to discuss people by name - even down to using the indefinite article (ie 'a man has been charged', not 'the man has been charged'.)

Yet the Guardian is running this (a profile of each of the people charged):

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/201 ... llsborough

I accept that contempt laws (or maybe just habits/standards) have changed since I did my journo training, but I think there has to be significant risk of this trial being prejudiced at this point.

Yeah, there's been so much coverage of Bettison and Duckenfield in particular that I struggle to see how they'll find a jury with a neutral opinion of them. Just look at the reviews of Bettisons book on Amazon which is heavily moderated as comment sections go, people have very strong opinions on him.

Hillsborough trial: No verdict over David Duckenfield

The jury in the trial of Hillsborough match commander David Duckenfield has been unable to reach a verdict.

Former Ch Supt Duckenfield, now 74, had denied the gross negligence manslaughter of 95 Liverpool fans in the 1989 disaster.

Lawyers for Mr Duckenfield have said they will oppose an application from prosecutors for a retrial.

Ex-Sheffield Wednesday club secretary Graham Mackrell was found guilty of a health and safety charge.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has said it will seek a retrial for Mr Duckenfield, of Ferndown, Dorset.

But lawyers for the former South Yorkshire Police officer said they would apply for a "stay of proceedings" to prevent another trial.
