Hi guys and girls.

I'm coming home for a week or two end of June and was wondering if you had any advice on hire cars. I need something a bit flexible due to not knowing if I'll be dropping off at same place I'm picking it up and also... what date I'll actually be flying back. But I also don't want to pay through the roof for it. A small car is fine as long. As I can fit my suitcase in it...back seat being a feasible option.

Any tips on where to look or what company to go with? I think I'd have to choose a large firm due to moving around the country.

I'm 25 and have been driving for 8 years.

I've used Europcar and Enterprise. Not had problems with either, although I've only used Enterprise once (Europcar about eight times).

I think Enterprise is slightly cheaper, although with Europcar for some reason they never seem to have the model in that you reserve, so you get an upgrade for free.

I do know that Enterprise offer discounts to certain professional memberships, like when I was subscribed to a co-working space we got some free credit or wedge off for a 1 day rent per week or something like that. Besides that I can't comment as I don't drive, but it did make it a more attractive proposition actually learning to.

I have only ever used them once but that happened to me as well. I went for a bog standard cheap car and ended up with a bloody great big 4x4 at the same price as they didn't have any other vehicles available.

Isn't it generally recommended to buy third party excess insurance when hiring a car as well since the excesses are normally ridiculous and the insurance the hire companies sell is ridiculously overpriced?

If it's anything like Spain then yes get your own excess insurance elsewhere before hiring the car. When you come to hire the car they will try to get you to take out their own excess waiver which will be way more expensive than others you can buy online. This is based on using big international companies in Spain so i assume it will be the same with their offices in the UK.

I got lumped with a 4x4 once as well, which I actually wasn't happy about, partly because I don't like 4x4s but mostly because I ended up spending twice as much on petrol!
