During the first world war, Hitler had a massive twirly moustache. However, to fit in his respirator he had to shave it off. He decided, rather than go clean shaven like everybody else, he'd only shave off the obstructing bits of 'tache, leaving a little bit under his nose. He kept this style from then on.
