Details

The new game is simply called “HITMAN”. We did this because in many ways this is the start of a new journey for Hitman. Don’t think of it as a reboot, though - think of it as a pure Hitman experience and the foundation for future HITMAN games. Agent 47 is the aspirational assassin, he’s at the absolute peak of his power this time around. This is our central promise: a pure assassin fantasy. So we liked the simplicity and the power of calling this game HITMAN. We want him to be powerful and embody the fantasy completely, and he will remain a constant throughout everything we do with the games going forward.

So what is this new game? Well first off HITMAN is still a creative stealth action game, featuring the greatest assassin out there, Agent 47. As an operative of the International Contract Agency, his job is to take out high-profile targets all over the world, supported by his long-time handler Diana Burnwood. Each location in the game is a living sandbox, a place where every NPC has a name and every room matters. We’ve focused on making sure you, the players, have complete freedom of approach over how, where and when you decide to take out your target. Creativity from players is fully expected, you have the power and intelligence of Agent 47 at your fingertips and it is your choice whether to use brute force or orchestrate a genuine masterpiece of assassination.

We are building an expanding and evolving world of assassination. The experience will begin on December 8th and we will release new locations, missions and hits over time at regular intervals through 2016, which means we’ll all be able to share in the excitement of a new content drop at the same time. Rather than unboxing a game, playing it and then that’s sort of it, we want to deliver a true community experience - creating an ongoing and evolving game which plays out with a finale that brings the story arc together. Our primary goal is to keep HITMAN players fully engaged, so between bigger drops we will be creating one-off live events and live targets to keep you immersed in the experience.

Only saw the announcement trailer, had no idea it was coming out this year but was pretty impressed with the gameplay reveal. Interesting how they're dolling out content.

"It is fully complete at launch but it is not finished," studio head Hannes Seifert told VideoGamer.com at E3 earlier today. "What we do is we start the journey on December 8 and what we put out there is going to be a big game. But over the course of 2016 we'll add more locations, more missions and we'll have things like targets that only appear for, say, 2 days. That's something you can only do in the live world."

The game falls outside of traditional release models, launching as a full-priced $60 release but with additional content concluding the story rolling out in the months following launch. Once that content has been released, the game will be available to purchase on disc.

We're not an Early Access game because Early Access games are unfinished by definition - you're part of the development," Seifert says. "Everything we ship on December 8 will be completely finished, it will be a very polished experience. It's also going to be a very big game. There are other products that sell a game for $60 and then try to sell you a Season Pass for another $40 on top, so you spend $100 or $120 for all the stuff that happens later on. We said no, we don't want to do that.

"We think it's wrong to approach players like that because players want to be part of that experience but they don't necessarily want to be ripped off. What we're going to sell is all of that but it's for a one-price package."

This is a full-fledged Hitman," Seifert promises. "Actually it's a bigger Hitman game than ever before, it will be more than Absolution. Our biggest levels are way bigger than anything we had in Blood Money. The AI entities, we have about 300 of them when we used to have 40 or 50 in the previous games. So it's a very big game [that] we will keep updating. It's $60, no dollar more, no DLC or microtransactions or stuff like that. You will buy it and you will have entertainment for a few months on top."

So taking the Splatoon approach. For people who don't know, Splatoon didn't ship with all content. New maps, modes and weapons are being released over time, free of charge. Sounds like the same thing here. In two minds about this, full price game but not getting all the content at once. As long as there is a fine base game then I'm all for it. Keeps things interesting over release and maintains the hype of game.

I shouldn't like this method but it's working for me in Splatoon.

I've already pre-ordered this on PSN, that's how impressed I was with what they had to say.

I'm going to wait till we actually see one of these "playgrounds" in action properly before pulling the trigger.

Very wise choice. I just gave Absolution a go to see if it's as bad a Hitman game as I remember (it is) and even the open playground levels in that are insultingly boring and obvious. I remember people saying that the Chinatown level was one of the best in the game but it's effectively just one large room with a weapon in each corner which the target walks between until you decide which way you want to kill him.

Nothing will ever come close to Blood Money which is a shame because the Hitman series was genuinely unique back then. I wish another studio would create a spiritual successor as being a hitman is such a perfect fit for a game.

Am i right in thinking this is being released digitally first then a physical release once all the content is out?

I am not sure how it works to be honest, the wording was not quite clear. But that could be tricky with a lot of missions only being available for a certain period of time.

Has anyone else been asked to do a survey for IO about the new Hitman game?

Did I miss the joke or did Floex just forget to change the developer when he copied the formatting from another topic in the OP.

You read my survey? I basically told them to remake Blood Money with new levels and nicer graphics.

Certainly looking the part atleast. Not sure I want to throw down full retail price for a game that has its content spread out over a year but that's the for the developers to convince me to.

That definitely looks like proper Hitman but I'll never trust IO again after Absolution so I'll wait for impressions from real people, GRcade. I can kind of see their mentality as to why they're doing a staggered release if every level is that size (also money) but I'm still not convinced. Let me have the whole game and I'll replay at my leisure. Don't hand out one level at a time and force me to replay it immediately.

Hmm, just like Splatoon's system?

I'll probably hold off until the whole thing is available on disc.

Not really.

With Splatoon they added maps and modes in a few months, these guys are talking about starting with less and adding more over a much longer period.

Can I pay for individual missions? I fancy just playing a bit of this rather than a full game.

That looks very promising indeed. I enjoyed Absolution, but a return to 'proper' Hitman would be just the ticket.

I called off his players' names as they came marching up the steps behind him....All nice guys. They'll finish last. Nice guys. Finish last.
