PostThe Hobbit Movie Thread.
by Denster » Tue May 31, 2011 12:19 pm

Couldn't find the film thread, so lock if this was already mentioned, but I think these films are anticipated enough to warrant a new thread.

The names and release dates of Peter Jackson's two forthcoming films based on JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit have been announced.

The first film will be called The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and will be released in December next year.

The Hobbit: There and Back Again is scheduled to be out in December 2013.

Filming of both Lord of The Rings prequels in New Zealand faced a delay because of a row over actors' wages and Jackson being unwell.

In January the director was admitted to hospital with a perforated ulcer.

The movies, which will star Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, were earlier stalled by problems including a wrangle over distribution rights and the exit of original director Guillermo del Toro.

Sir Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood will reprise their roles as Gandalf the Grey and Frodo respectively.

Sir Christopher Lee is among the stars who will also appear in the new movies, along with actor Andy Serkis in the role of Gollum.

Much sooner than I expected to be fair. Can't wait!

EDIT: Updated the title to make it more of a official Hobbit discussion thread.

To be fair. The Hobbit is big enough news to warrant a thread of its own. It'll die quickly though as we do have a movie news thread.

Also, didn't Batman get its own thread?

I just looked, the use of the word 'Movie' must have foxed me. Change it to Film, we're British for God's sake!

We need more separate movie topics

Have to say the titles for this film are like something you'd expect on a 'straight to DVD' release

I also find it bizarre that Christopher Lee decided to come back, I mean, wasn't he majorly put-out that they cut him out of the cinema release of The Return of the King?

If you type Hobbit into search it already had two other topics created for it

PLAY | Final Fantasy VII Rebirth [92h]
WATCH | Ted Lasso S2, HiJack S1, The Apprentice S18
RACE | Westonbirt Half (March), Chew Valley 10k (June), GNR (Sept), Cardiff Half (Oct)

It's ok. I think they were created to early and just sank with lack of news.

Individual film topics should be created just before release to help them survive

And we should have a separate filmfolder other than Off Topic

PLAY | Final Fantasy VII Rebirth [92h]
WATCH | Ted Lasso S2, HiJack S1, The Apprentice S18
RACE | Westonbirt Half (March), Chew Valley 10k (June), GNR (Sept), Cardiff Half (Oct)

Careful, that's blasphemy on this forum. Before you know it you will have Hexx writing essays (full of  smilies) about how wrong you are.

Think I heard something about them adding to the story using notes and details that weren't included in the final book.

What kind of bullshit is this?

I suppose adding the White Council makes sense, though it ruins the surprise when Gandalf shows up at the end.

He is mentioned in LotR as watching over the Shire with some other rangers at Gandalf's request...

I think they could do quite a lot with the big fight scene towards the end of the book. I felt that Tolkien never really goes into detail with it apart from the basic battle strategy.

This makes it possible to have a scene where Bilbo Baggins surfs down a flight of stairs on a shield. With epic music playing.
