Gimli was just an unkempt Dwarf, these are proper Dwarves.

In the book, there was quite alot of songs... I pray they wont be in the movie.

I think the problem is, you have essentially a dozen dwarves, and need to tell them appart pretty easily, so appart from different colour clothes "crazy" hair and such will be a quick way of telling them apart.
