How do you generally plan holidays for the year?

Personally I have all my days as long weekends apart from a few days at Christmas so I end up with 22 long weekends (all Fridays except for 1 solitary Monday) and 2 for Christmas. I don't have a trip planned so the long weekends work for me as I always have a long weekend within a few weeks at most so it just feels like the whole year is less of a drag.

I realise I'm unusual so how do you plan them?

I'll usually spread four full weeks evenly through the year, i.e. every three months or so, and just hold onto the couple of odd days for when I might need them.

Last year I based my days off around the bank holidays except Christmas and New Year. It was nice getting 16 consecutive days off work for the price of 8 either side of Easter to play Zelda. I'm a bit like you in that I rarely go away but this year I plan to go to Japan so I won't be taking many days off before then.

I always take the day after the AFC/NFC Championship games and the Superbowl off, cant be dealing with the early start after the late nights, and I take the days between Xmas and New Years to give a nice 10 day block of time off. Outside of that theres no set schedule, I take the odd day here and there if something comes up or I need to sort something out and theres usually a week or two in there where I either go somewhere or I just enjoy some lazy time at home.

Check flights and airbnbs
Fret over which to book first
Book nothing
Check back a week later, panic buy the same flights for more money, and a worse airbnb
Repeat.

Someone who works for me does exactly this. A real pain to approve and update our schedule.

I like to try and have at least a week at a time, but I do book a Friday now and again just to escape my job.

Yes?

I don't really plan it. I'll take days here and there and decide on a week/fortnight off as and when. We have to give a months notice for a week off but otherwise we are free to book time off whenever we want as long as we are not leaving the place too short staffed. Although as we are very short staffed at the moment, I guess that system isn't working too well.

Just hit up Skyscanner and see where's cheap and that I want to go to.

Third year I've booked 95% of my leave together to get a month off. Did Japan, interailling in Europe and back to Asia this year. Feels great getting paid for a job I'm not even in the same continent as.

As for booking where to go, half looking on Skyscanner for cheap deals and just going, half seeing something rad I wanna do (run up a ski jump, walk 100k through breweries, cycle across Europe) and just find the cheapest flight out. Never really been one for saving so sometimes I'll just buy currency or pay for odd hotels before leaving.

I haven't really taken a proper 'holiday' since I started work, I just sort of plan days off around events. Like if I'm going to Ireland to watch the rugby I'll make a long weekend of it. Generally I try and give myself flexibility for when a band announces a tour I want to follow or something, which happened in both 2016 and 2017 though appears unlikely this year. I guess I use my annual leave for hobbies rather than getting too excited about visiting places - that can come later, when the bands I like are too gooseberry fool to pay to see.

Two weeks in May, two weeks in September, the rest goes on midweek football because I work eternal backshift.

Usually I do what I'm told by the wife as well. However, in a week I'm starting three months shared parental leave then I'm going back part time, so I'm basically working a reverse 5-2 to look after the boy. It's going to be really weird!

I tend to book off May half-term and a week in August for our main holidays. The rest of the year I just book as and when I require the time off. We bought a static Caravan in Weymouth last year so we'll be spending a lot of time down there.

Usually 2 weeks end of February/early March so I'm off around my birthday. 2 weeks sometime in May/June. A week in August for Edinburgh festival stuff. 2 weeks in November and whatever is left after that just gets used for certain days or whatever.

I use airmiles for flights so depending on where we're going I have to book quite a while in advance depending on where we want to go.

I work an eight week shift cycle that has a couple of sweet spots for taking annual leave so I can get quite a lot of time off. I usually have a couple of weeks/ten days between January and March for snowboarding, time off at the end of May/start of June for our birthdays and time off for a holiday between August and October. There will be some other time off that is dictated by my shifts.
