What's the problem?

Just benches miles away from bosses and then travelling around in unmapped areas desperately searching for one. All solved now :toot:
That strawberry floating rabbit though :x

A fair way from bosses is a little annoying, but it's never too far. Sort of adds to the tension of the boss too. The game is pretty generous with soul, so, being at full health for a boss isn't difficult. Going through an unmapped area is meant to be a struggle. Congrats, you felt the emotion you were supposed to feel. Idk no rabbit though. Thanks for the spoilers.

I don't like the shops being so spread out, but I've never had a problem with the benches.

Oh strawberry float me. Just lost 2k geos trying to do that strawberry floating extended platforming section in Crystal Peak.

This whole region has been nothing but frustration. Trapping you down there and forcing you to run an incredibly difficult bit of twitch platforming in order to escape is just cruel design. I'd been carrying those geos for hours trying to get out so I could spend them. I wasn't willingly risking them to gain a greater reward, I was being forced to risk them simply to progress. And then I lost them, and I feel cheated out of them.

Fair dos, I've not played DS, but those who have have compared the games. I think it's the combination of the desolate and abandoned atmosphere, the dark graphics, the harsh difficulty in parts (if what I'm reading about the later-game is correct), the loss of currency when you die (unless you can reclaim it), and the fact that... well, again going by what I've heard, DS is basically a 3D Metroidvania in a lot of ways itself.

The label stays, I'm afraid.

I bought it on that comparison and haven't been disappointed. It's 2D Dark Souls through and through.

It shares a lot of thematics and certain gameplay elements (like death retrieval), but the core gameplay is completely different from Dark Souls being a 2D platformer. I can see how people can argue either way, it's obviously not a Dark Souls clone in the same way as Nioh for example.

I've tried and failed to get into Souls games multiple times but I'm loving Hollow Knight. It's the core gameplay I find way more appealing in this.

Which bit is this? With the doors/pillars/piston things that smash into the ground? That isn't necessary and just opens up a shortcut/gets a grub. I don't remember the game trapping me anywhere else.

After killing my first dreamer in the Deepnest, I got momentarily stuck as it seemed like everywhere was closed off needing either a high jump, flying or being able to survive acid. But then I went back to the Crystal Peak and reached the very top, which I had missed, finding both the shop key and getting the sideways launching power. That kicked off a chain reaction of then almost immediately getting acid survival and double jump, so now I have plenty of stuff open again.

I love how NPCs actually do things and move around in this game, it makes it feel so much more lived in. Although I am pretty upset that the banker has up and disappeared along with 2500 of my Geo!. I found it very cool that after killing the dreamer, the crossroads have become infected. I also laughed at Sly the shopkeeper turning out to be the Grand Nailmaster.

Oh and with Zote I read through all 50-odd of his principles, I love that guy. Even if he has stolen my fangirl.

Nope, the bit to the far right with the flipping platforms and the lasers that you need to cross to get the Crystal Dash. You can't escape the section without it, or at least I couldn't find a way, and I lost my geos whilst attempting the crossing for the third time.

Of course, as soon as they were gone and the pressure was off I did it on the next go. I still stand by that assessment though: it traps you down there until you complete that bit which is fiendishly difficult. With no shops in the region, it essentially forces you to risk everything to get out.

I didn't think it was that hard tbh, there are much more difficult platforming sections - although granted, none I can think of that are necessary, only ones that hide secrets.

Yeah, that's my issue: it was the one difficult platforming bit I've seen that was necessary. I'm not good at those parts and generally avoid them (or at least spend/bank my geos before I do). This one though had me really riled up.

Completed this or at least got the first ending last night, but judging by the wiki there's still plenty left to explore.

For me the Souls-like death mechanics work well for bosses and general exploration but don't really complement the platforming elements. I prefer something more like Super Meat Boy - where the challenge is higher but there's little punishment for failing and more encouragement for persevering.

The Deepnest is a real strawberry floater of an area. Never died so much in the game so far. I'm probably not supposed to be here yet given I haven't done Crystal Peaks, Sewers, Fog Place, etc. but god damn am I gonna blitz my way through anyway. Annoyingly there are various pits which break away and they keep catching me out cause they're so quick and I'm not expecting them.

I did there first too, and yeah the breaking floor to spikes is what will get you. The atmosphere there is really oppressive, but it's not actually as bad as it seems. Funny that lots of people seem to go there and think they are there too early - I wonder if that is deliberate in design.
