This game looks popular enough (judging by the Switch talk thread) to get its own topic, and since I started it today I thought, what better time? Like the self-aggrandising newbie I am. Parp.

Anyway, bit special this, innit? Bit bleak too. I hope the colour palette livens up later on. That said, HK is a joy to control, and the first boss (I think?) felt great to fight. I'm a fan thus far, me and (it would seem) everybody else who's played it.

Yeah it does. Each area sort of has its own colour. I'm loving it so far, though I've hit that point where there's a bunch of things on the map I want to go to and do and don't know where to start.

It's very good. I've also started dying lots and it is upsetting.

Currently fighting through the sewers. Dung man was okay in the end but I just cannot do the giant maggot that constantly spawns enemies.

I've been playing about an hour a night and reckon I'm close to the end. Just my luck to have found the Nailsmith a few days ago in the one bit of City of Tears I neglected to explore. :fp:

Just finished this today with 77% completion. Absolutely loved it. I'm not a fan of the Dark Souls genre and this certainly shares some elements but this dominated my game time for last 3 weeks. Some of the bosses will whip you over and over but you can level/power up and come back later for a re-match, it's never unfair. Haven't done much of the DLC which is free, the devs put so much effort into this title would easily been happy to pay £20.

I really really really wish it didn't have the dark souls label because the links are tenuous at best. It's a metroidvania through and through and possibly the best example of one ever made. It's just so dense.

I found upgrading the nail twice as essential - think it can be done 3 times in total

I just need that final piece of Pale Ore and I should have it fully upgraded. Hopefully it's at the Colosseum of Fools as I haven't bothered with that yet.

I don't like that you're ahead of me. Stop playing until I catch up please.

I lost 1600 earlier today because of the way you phantom thing doesn't actually always get left where you die and for whatever reason it was in a place I had never even been before so I couldn't get it! :x

So annoying! Love the game in the whole though :D

The most money I lost is 1000, but there isn't anything for me to save up to buy atm anyway. I also gave away just over 500 at some shrine, which didn't seem to do anything :(

It upsets me to think you were fighting through at base strength. There is even dialogue with other characters telling you about him to presumably try and stop you from missing him  Earlier I upgraded my nail for the second time so now I feel better about not going up against damage sponges. I also just got the spin attack B)

Was playing this on the plane to and from Berlin the other week. Made the journey an absolute joy. Almost looking forward to my next flight to Japan so I can use it as an excuse to buy new games.

The only complaint I could level at the game right now is that some of the benches are just too far away from boss rooms. I understand why games like this have some slightly obtuse mechanics, but unlike a lack of free fast travel or denying you the map for a time (which are both great, and add up to make the game what it is), this one adds nothing - it only takes away.

The problem with only playing it in small bursts before bed is I forget some of the hints and dialogue between sessions.

Fair dos, I've not played DS, but those who have have compared the games. I think it's the combination of the desolate and abandoned atmosphere, the dark graphics, the harsh difficulty in parts (if what I'm reading about the later-game is correct), the loss of currency when you die (unless you can reclaim it), and the fact that... well, again going by what I've heard, DS is basically a 3D Metroidvania in a lot of ways itself.

The label stays, I'm afraid.

I did think that might get annoying. As a naturally impatient blighter myself, I can see the lack of fast travel getting to me more than it does to some - but then, previous Metroid games have never had it, so maybe it won't be a problem!

This was a game I had largely dismissed, just a name floating around wearing the Souls-like label. Plus, y'know, bugs. Ick. I'm glad I finally paid attention. I'm about 5 hours in and thoroughly enjoying it. The muted aesthetic is marvellously realised, and exploring these formerly bustling ruins has really captured my imagination.

Also, while I'm here, a query (in spoilers, just in case);
In beating a shade that resulted from a rather unsuccessful piece of platforming, I noticed it using an ability I had recently unlocked. Am I right to assume that as the game progresses and you gain abilities, the shade will become harder to beat as it too will have access to these skills?
