So I've never had it. And yes, I've been burgled once. Luckily, it was a shared house and nothing of mine was stolen. Now that I'm living in a decent place at last, I think it's time to be an adult and get some home insurance. How much do you guys pay monthly? I've just put my details through a price-comparison site and I was surprised to learn the prices start from a fiver a month.

I don't own many things of value. Mainly it's my Blu-ray collection, TV and games consoles I'm worried about, as well as mine and my partner's iPhones. Not much else.

I've got £50,000 worth of cover. It's about £13 a month and I simply wouldn't want to be without it. The cover is quite excessive, but was a hangover from when I shared a house with two others who also owned a large number of electricals (so 3 large LCD TVs, game collections, etc, etc). I collect quite a large amount of "stuff" - records, games, DVDs/Blu-Rays, screenprinted art and lots of electronics as well. This stuff as a collection soon adds up to a large value of money. It just seems like a sensible expenditure.

Seeing as my grandparents were robbed and the whole house vandalised when I was younger, I'm probably overly cautious about this.

However if I did ever get robbed, I want to feel like Brewster's Millions as I go and drop a gooseberry fool ton of money on new gear.

Are you talking about building and contents insurance? Or just one of those?

Don't think I'm interested in building insurance as I rent from a landlord and assume he already has that. In any case this isn't my problem as a tenant - or is it?

Landlords have to have Building insurance for the properties they let, you just insure your gooseberry fool.

You have more than 2K worth of gear Gario. We are talking about replacing all your stuff, pots, pans, games, tellybox and other bits and bobs.

Think catastrophe. Think of a gas explosion and having to start from scratch.

The was I explain it at work, is if you take the roof off your house, tip it upside down, everything that falls out (and carpets I think) are your contents, the rest is buildings. It's hard to work out roughly how much everything you own is worth, but if you start with the big items fridges/teles/consoles etc then go from there you'll realize you've probably got way more than £2k.

One key thing to remember about home insurance is something called 'under insurance' (not pleasent).

Do yourself a favour and read this guide on it: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insura ... -insurance

You'd be completely daft not to have it.
