This has all the ingredients of a game I'd be excited about:

> No-one is talking about it
> No other GRcadian will get it
> Technically "awful; atrocious; worst ever etc" (i.e. not amazing)
> Open-worldy missions and stuff

I've been looking at a few early play-throughs on YouTube and, yeah, the frame-rate is weak and it is a bit jumpy. But I'm stilll intrigued by it. This vid makes it all sound pretty cool:

I'll pop back here on release day to have a chat with myself about it.

Looked interesting when CryTek were making it, now it just looks like Far Cry Revolution.

Pass.

It looks thematically interesting, but I don't think I can handle another open world action game - will wait till its about a tenner and buy it spontaneously. I should hopefully have a beefier PC by then too.

Can't say I'm surprised, the original was as dull and mediocre as they come.

I'll probably have a look at it

The problem with open world games is that it's impossible to tell how engaging they'll be until you play them. It could be a watch dogs where the world is just the most tedious busywork or it could be something like Dying Light where the open world actually adds something to the game besides padding.

I think I'm just fatigued with open world games, you find that there's so much empty lifeless wasteland, I was impressed when the technology was introduced with the old GTA games, but it's just become an excuse to compensate for lazy level design.

Hopefully we'll see this fad die out. Wide linear is the way to go, it's what made Uncharted 4 and the original Halo so great. Give me freedom, but also give me boundaries and structure.

Reviews are out and there are plenty of 5s and 6s. Unsurprisingly, it appears to be a bit rough in places although the environments have had some compliments. The PC version seems to be running okay for most but the console version - which is what I'd be playing - apparently struggles.

I'm a little disappointed although I'd still like to give it a go. Probably one to wait for a price drop.

Metacitic 52

More negative reviews than positive, I'd avoid this like the plague.

Mr Stirling is rather critical:

Jim strawberry floating Sterling, Son wrote:The state of Homefront: The Revolution is, quite frankly, appalling. While Kaos Studios’ original effort was mundane but competent, Dambuster’s attempted sequel is a garbage nest of such low quality I’m thoroughly shocked it’s being sold as a complete, premium priced retail production.

The PC version is horrendously optimized. Even when running as smooth as possible, it manages only to provide thirty frames-per-second of ugly looking guff that struggles to load textures efficiently or run without stuttering hiccups...

...The final straw for me came when, during a mission, my gun stopped working. It had ammunition but it simply wouldn’t fire – it was held upwards, as if I were in a non-combat zone, while I was shot to death. That’s when I gave up trying to play this headache-inducing, severely half-baked waste of time...

...Fortunately there’s nothing to miss if you never even try the game. From what I was able to withstand, The Revolution offers nothing literally any other open-world FPS can’t. It’s a big city full of cookie-cutter objectives to complete, backed up by mediocre combat against a bunch of masked, uninspiring, identical stormtrooper dudes.

Oh, and sometimes you can ride a motorbike, which is the absolute pits. Due to the zoetrope framerate and wild camera swings, I often opted to walk than ride even if the objective was miles away. This was preferable to wrestling with laughable vehicular controls and a bike that slalomed like a bar of soap in a hockey rink....

...Forced to only imagine this game running at its best, I still see nothing but a pedestrian, corny, badly designed game. Dreary missions, an open world that lacks any charm, A.I. behavior that boggles in its inadequacy, and unengaging combat makes for a game that, even in its finest condition, manages to be just another sub-par sandbox peddling worn-out ideas.

1/10

Hmm. Guess i'll get this way down the line when it bombs and is a few quid, much like the original, in fact.

I wonder if Sterling is looking for a bit of attention by awarding that kind of score? C'mon, 1/10... really? .

I'm usually okay with a game that is a bit clunky if I'm keen on the ideas and setting. In this case I'll probably try and grab it once its cheap.

FAKE EDIT: I saw that some reviewers - including Metro GameCentral, who I usually trust - appear to have reviewed the game without applying the Day One patch. The vids that I've looked at online - even the PS4 version - seem to be reasonably technically proficient. Still clunky, but nice-looking in places.

Right, I played the opening half-hour (on PS4) last night and my first impressions are:

+ I like the environments; they look good, have decent textures, are well populated and use excellent lighting effects
+ I enjoy these open-world kinds of games - it reminds me of Watch Dogs / Far Cry / Assassins
- The frame rate isn't great; not the "worst thing ever" as some are proclaiming but - if this kind of thing bugs you - you won't like it

I am keen to delve further into it as I enjoy this style of game and I am intrigued by the "USA being invaded" storyline. I hope the game does well enough that Deep Silver will release updates to improve some of the technical aspects; there is a lot of potential here and it just needs a bit more polish.

[Bump]

As usual, I didn't play much beyond the opening half-hour. But it's in my (digital) gaming "I'd like to get into that" pile and... yeah, I will do some time.

It's back in focus because another (free) game update is releasing alongside the final expansion during March. The "Spring" update will include adding Pro support to the PS4 version, offering "a boost to resolution and performance".

The expansion is called "Beyond the Walls" and this image is intriguing; it suggests that the player will be taken far from the familiar city environments.

Finally, a trial version will also be released in March for PS4 and XBO. So, if you were a bit wary of picking up the game, this could be a great way of seeing if it could surprise you.

I think I may grab this, just to see how bad it is. I think it's only £7 for the steam key on some site I can't remember right now.
