rinks wrote:Hello, loves. I've just found out that late-80s weird-fest Society is on tonight. Horror Channel (Freeview 70, don't know about other providers). It's over twenty years since I last saw it, but it made an impression on me. I'm not entirely sure I recommend it, but I'll be watching it to find out. I don't expect it to have aged well.

No spoilers: It's about a high school kid (Billy Warlock, who soon after joined Baywatch) from a wealthy family, who suspects that his nearest and dearest are up to murderous orgies in private. He sets out to find the truth. I'll leave it there.

It's a geniune treat of a movie. Few films capture the something is wrong but I don't know what vipe as well as Society. I saw it many years ago and it's hard to forget. Some of the imagery is nightmare worthy and the ending is turned up to 11.

Seeing it spoiler free is essential as the plot pulls you in. I saw it late at night for my first watch, it stayed with me for days.

It's a horror movie but so much more. It's 80s neon sleeze and bautiful people with secrets. Also reminds me of The Invitation (new movie on Netflix now) and also Parents ( I think that's what it's called)

I bought the Blu-ray on import last Christmas and it's a film which has aged like wine. It's out in the UK with a lovely front cover and well worth a buy.

Going to watch this now :)

Thanks for the recommendation.

I finally got round to it myself. It's every bit as good as I remembered. Somehow I had totally forgotten about the hair-fixated weird mother, Mrs Carlin!

It's only now that I realise how much Night Trap was going for the same vibe. I don't know how I failed to make the connection back then!

Also Death Note has just been added. The original movies were amazing so hopefully it translates well into an American movie.

I watched the first two and it's not good. Watch the Mr Mercedes show if you want some Stephen King TV.

Early reviews are all positive for the new IT movie. Exciting times, that plus Jigsaw later this year should be good.

Anybody got any horror films lined up to watch this weekend or over Halloween?

I'm going to watch Hellraiser and [rec] 2 over the weekend, both of which I've never seen before. Maybe Trick 'r' Treat too, but I watched it last year and can still remember pretty much everything about it, so I'm not that bothered by it. Hoping there might be some good films on TV as well (unlikely, but I live in hope).

I have a few dug out that I plan to get a look at. The Grudge (original), The Shining, The Descent and Alien being among them. I doubt I will get to watch them all.

[Rec] 2 is an interesting one. The first is a great show, not sure about the direction the second one goes in. Would love to read some impressions.

I really liked the direction they took with [Rec] 2, the paranormal angle works well and gives it something different to your normal zombie movie, the way it crosses over and fills in gaps left by the first film is also a really nice touch. I've definitely always thought of it as being on a par with the first. Rec 4 ties the whole story up nicely as well although it's nowhere near as good as the first 2. The less said about Rec 3 the better...

Man Rec really got me, as a newby to horror films The Excorist is the only other film that stayed with me after the initial pant soiling.

Watched The Babadook and It Follows the other day, both very good.

I really enjoyed [rec], and would maybe go as far to say it's one of my favourites in the genre. I did see a bit of 3 once it and seemed pretty silly, but I'm looking forward to seeing what 2's like. I noticed Alien is on Film4 tonight, tempted to give it a watch. :datass:

Thinking of watching this on Youtube tomorrow. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-41740176

I didn't watch it at the time but I remember the controversy.

Watched the sequel to Creep a few nights ago and it was just as good as the first film.

Worth a watch.

Watched The Witch last night and it's stuck with my today, genuinely unsettling. Combination of the story material and the soundtrack.

Difficult to class it as a "scary" film, because it's not like there are jump scares or anything, but this constant eerie dread that seeps out of every scene is just suffocating. I loved it.

The Mist - Horror Channel - 9pm tonight.

Amazing Stephen King film from the director of The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. Also possibly best ending ever, only The Vanishing, Old Boy and Sleepaway Camp come close.

If you liked that then try A Christmas Horror Story, same Creep Show set up but all tied together very well with some genuinely funny and some genuinely creepy bits. It's currently on Netflix.
