Can't really think of many standout horror films, new ones are normally cack. If I had to name one all time great I would probably go with Salem's Lot, but make sure you find the original with David Soul and not the remake. Be interested to know if this is on Netflix to see if it is as scary as I remember.

Yes?

I'm keeping the horror thing going, I've watched The Exorcist and The Descent over the past couple of nights.

The Exorcist made me appreciate why some people swear by older horror films, it actually told a story rather than just trying to make the audience jump every two seconds. This one is going to stick with me, I've carried on reading about it to learn about the fuss at the time of its release and the supposed true story it was based on. The Descent was alright, not particularly scary and I really didn't understand the stuff with Juno as she clearly didn't mean to do the thing that pissed of the main character.

Did you watch it? Thoughts? I like the first one, the second was definitely a lot worse. Though I did like the way it interlinked with the plot of the first film.

I haven't double-checked to see if it's been mentioned, but if there are horror fans out there that haven't seen The Orphanage, you need to have a word with yourselves.

I watched Solstice the other night. Emphatically not scary at all, but had a genuinely nice twist. 3/10. Oh, and Amanda Seyfried's boobs. :datass:

I didn't like the Exocist 2 very much, but thought the 3rd was quite good, and also quite different.

Got round to watching it this weekend. Not a patch on the first but still a fairly enjoyable watch but instantly forgettable. Swtiched my logic sensors to stand by and let the movie do its thing. I too liked what they did with regards to your spoiler. I came away thinking (completely insulting the Alien franchise by saying this) Rec is to Alien what Rec 2 is to Aliens.

Plus, I'll spoil this just in case, the female lead is something else :datass:

 Just for the record in no way, shape or form am I comparing Rec with Alien. None, nadda etc. More that each film started off as a horror while their respective successors taking the more action oriented approach.

I thought REC 2 was a good film. Not as good as the first but still 7/10, I like the different camera streams and the way it's set like half an hour after the first film.

Not sure if it's classed as horror but for people who enjoyed The Orphanage should check out Julia's Eyes:

Great film.

Big bump for this thread as I'm in the mood for some horror films again.

Recently watched Insidious 2 (poor, not a patch on the first, which I liked), and The Conjuring, which was much better and pretty scary in places. I feel like horror as a genre may have dried up a little bit after the Paranormal Activity craze of the past seven years or so.

Is there anything good coming up, cinema or DVD, that we should be looking out for?

Coincidentally I got the elm Street bluray set on Friday. Got up to 5 they're all pretty watchable as far as horror sequels go.

Nice one, cheers for that.

I hope Jugface is as terrible as I assume it is from the title...

Jugface sounds like a sequel to Jarhead.

Jugface isn't particularly scary but it's quite an interesting take on "hillbilly horror" -
JUG FACE tells the story of a pregnant teen trying to escape a backwoods community when she discovers that she may be sacrificed to a mysterious pit. The entity in the pit requires a life for keeping the community safe. The face of the person to be sacrificed is crafted onto a ceramic jug....

I enjoyed Jugface just felt the ending was a little anti-climactic.

I looked for it last night but couldn't see it - is it US Netflix only?

Either way, I find anti-climactic endings are pretty much a staple of the horror genre, which is why (I guess) so many of them fall back on the jump-right-at-the-end cliche. Or the 'you thought it was over but really it isn't, leaving it open for a sequel' line.

I've thought this ever since I was a kid - I always loved Stephen King books but almost always found the endings mediocre. I think it's because there is never any real-world resolution to supernatural problems.

The Conjuring was refreshing for me in that it actually reached a conclusion - when they return to the house, I was fully expecting it all to go off again before cutting to credits, but they actually had the balls to end with a happy family scene, which I thought was pretty good. If totally unscary...

I love horror films , watched one last night that came out i think about 4 years ago called Skew. It was very interesting , it's done in the camcorder style thing again but it isn't a found footage type of film but just through the eyes live of what is being recorded on the camera so including rewinding and pausing etc. I won't give anything away though as if i tell you what starts happening it will kind of give it away. Below is the synopsis from IMDB

When Simon, Rich, and Eva head out on an eagerly anticipated road trip, they bring along a video camera to record their journey. What starts out as a carefree adventure slowly becomes a descent into the ominous as unexplained events threaten to disrupt the balance between the three close friends. Each one of them must struggle with personal demons and paranoia as friendships are tested and gruesome realities are revealed...and recorded.

Another one i watched recently also was Maniac which is a modern remake of the 80's horror film, i havent seen the original but i did hear it was good and from chatting to a friend and when i described the remake he said it sounded nearly the same. It stars Elijah Woods who plays a very good serial killer(that's not a spoiler it's kind of obvious from the start and the dvd/netflix cover) I would recommend Maniac if you like your serial killer gore type films.

Cheers - I've added Maniac to My List.

One other I can recommend is The Wrong House, which isn't pure horror, it's more of a thriller, but has a reasonably interesting concept. The closest thing I can compare it to is Triangle, with Melissa  George - again, not overly scary, and massively flawed in places, but does things I've never seen in another film.

I've just realised the Wrong House is better known as 'House Hunting'...

But it's only £3 on Amazon.

The Descent is probably the best 'modern' horror i can remember although that's almost ten years old..
