This new game won't affect the already announced Alienation:

I hope it's closer in feel to Smash TV than Robotron or Defender. Smash TV.

Housemargue might just be my favourite current development studio. Bringing back the arcade games I love

I really hope for a Smash TV style affair with this one.

Jarvis playing a prototype of the game.

Video description says it uses music and fx from Resogun, but the game is entirely new.

I've missed this thread until now... this collaboration is awesome news - what an incredible team-up!

I back up the hopes for a Smash TV-style extravaganza as I really enjoyed that on the SNES. I'd equally like a new version of the N64s Robotron 64 as that was one of my favourite shooters. Excitement rising!

Yeah, MatterFall isn't the 'Jarvis Project'.

I reckon this will be something different to any of the previous games. I doubt they would just want to put out Smash TV 2016.

Now that we've seen MatterFall, and see that it's a modern looking game, I think it's more likely the Jarvis game will have a retro, Eugene Jarvis feel to it, much like Resogun.
What's the point of having Jarvis on board if you want to make a game that isn't reminiscent of his classics? (I'd still want to try it, but I'd be a lot less interested.)

Because he has lots of good ideas for shoot-em-ups and isn't a one trick pony? I think it would be a bit insulting asking to work with someone just so you could make a new version of one of his older games and TBH, you don't need him for that anyway.

Yes?

Not saying it would be a rehash of a old game. And being retro wouldn't mean he couldn't bring totally new ideas to the twin stick genre.

PostRe: Nex Machina: Death Machine - Housemarque's next game with industry vet Eugene Jarvis

Introducing Nex Machina on PS4, From Housemarque and Eugene Jarvis

Hey, Mikael from Housemarque here. A few months after the release of Resogun we bumped into Eugene Jarvis at DICE Summit 2014, where he received a Pioneer award for his contribution to the gaming industry. Eugene, creator of arcade cult classics such as Defender, Robotron, and Smash TV, has always been one of our major sources of inspiration for the kind of games we are famous for.

You can see Eugene’s invisible hand in the gameplay of Dead Nation, Alienation, and — of course — Resogun, which is Defender’s “spiritual successor.” What makes both of our philosophies resonate is that we believe games should be fun, fast, and brutal.

We stayed in touch. He played Resogun. And when we asked if he wanted to do something together, he jumped on board without hesitation.

We are now proud to show you the result of that collaboration. What was called for a long time “the Jarvis Project” we can now reveal as Nex Machina (Which, roughly translated, means Death Machine) — the most explosive top-down action shooter Housemarque has ever created.

Taking hints from both Robotron and Smash TV, Nex Machina focuses on pure arcade action, voxel destruction, and competition. But before delving into more of that, I want to talk about the game’s setting.

In a world where humans have become more and more addicted to technology, machines have evolved from simple helpers to replacements for unwanted jobs — conscious entities with their own feelings. Robots surpassed mankind’s abilities, becoming the superior being, and started to refuse to serve us.

After the singularity, the rise of the machines was inevitable — and unstoppable. But nobody even noticed. Mankind’s best and brightest were too busy updating their status on social media. When all seems lost, out of the blue a mysterious hero appears: you. Who sent you? Will you save humanity from itself once again? And last but not least, are your skills sharp enough to confront an army of fiendish robots out for blood?

We’ve been thinking long and hard about how to bring back a “true arcade experience” in a world where arcade halls are almost extinct. Nex Machina is our shot at cracking that problem, and over the next few months we’ll have more information on what you can expect on day one. For now, rest assured that the game will provide the classic Housemarque arcade experience and a kickass competitive framework, which we will expand over time to make it the obvious choice for players looking for a challenge.

Be kind to your electronics. You never know what can happen…

I was ODing on hype created by Uncharted and Yakuza news (and then TLoU P2) to pay full attention to the Nex Machina trailer, and so only realised last night that it was Project Jarvis. As much as I enjoyed Alien Nation, I think this will be closer to the type of game I like to see from them. I recall getting Robotron vibes from it when I was watching it live. ( :fp: Yet still I failed make the Housemarque/Jarvis game connection.)
