PostRe: Nex Machina: Death Machine - Arcade?, PC, PS4 - Housemarque / Eugene Jarvis - Leaderboards to inc action replays!

Resogun and Super Stardust developer Housemarque has revealed a few of the key features from its upcoming twin-stick shooter Nex Machina.

This collaboration with Smash TV and Robotron 2084 creator Eugene Jarvis will contain a video replay feature embedded within its online leaderboards. So if you see the person with the top score and think, "how in god's name could anyone achieve such a thing?" you can simply click on it and watch their mesmerising performance.

Beyond that, there will be a Season structure in which players compete over set periods of time and gain ranks as they go. Along the way they'll earn experience points and season coins as they undergo specific seasonal challenges.

These challenges will mix and match various "game rules". These can influence the speed at which the game is played, whether enemies retaliate damage with "revenge bullets", or you can adjust it so the game offers only one life with no opportunities to gain continues.

Nex Machina is due this summer on PS4 and Steam with a PC closed beta available closer to launch.

Eurogamer have assessed the game as Essential :o .

Eurogamer wrote:...Nex Machina feels less like a game and more like the happy, diabolical result of a seance. One night, in the dark of a Finnish winter, Housemarque summoned the devil. And the devil was Eugene Jarvis.

And Metro GameCentral have reached a "9/10" assessment, saying:

...the game to run at a blistering speed, not just in terms of the second-to-second gameplay but the almost total of lack of downtime when moving between stages or recovering from death. And unlike many arcade games the breakneck pacing does not come at the cost of off-putting difficulty, especially if you stay away from the harder modes. Nex Machina is almost perfect, and one of the most successful collaborations between like-minded creators that gaming has ever seen.

One aspect I am unsure about - and GameCentral touch upon this in their full review - is that the graphics can sometimes become a little indistinct. I struggle with picking out colours and the game may be a little murky at times for me. I am gonna seek out a few more vids to investigate.

I didn't want to be the one to kill SoK's 10-post streak, but hopefully the reviews get more people to take notice.

I was torn on getting it on PS4 or PC, but I want to play it on the big TV, and I know the visuals won't compress well through in-home streaming, so PS4 it is. I got too wrapped up in FFXIV last night that I didn't have time to get started, but it's waiting for me when I get home at least.

This has managed to totally pass me by. Love everything Housemarque have done. I need to finish Alienation, but will definitely get this at some point.

This is like a hybrid of Dead Nation, Resogun, Robotron and Smash TV - and it's bloody amazing. I've only played through the first 'world' and, although it's familiar in many ways, it's also totally fresh. And full-on, after a few easy sub-levels the amount of enemies onscreen is cranked up.

Eurogamer compared it to side scrolling Treasure classics like Gunstar Heroes and Alien Soldier, which has certainly piqued my interest. Such a crazy, crazy week for games though.
Also, how many games do Housemarque get out the door?! Those guys are beasts.

Was thinking about it but then I saw MGC's thoughts on the game:

Matterfall

In Short: Nowhere close to the arcade perfection of Resogun or Nex Machina, this undercooked action platformer lacks the precise controls and instant appeal of its stablemates.

Pros: Nice visual design and a typically good soundtrack. The basic concepts are good and the boss battles very intense.

Cons: Everything feels either underveloped or overdesigned, especially the fiddly controls and platforming. Dash attack is frustrating to use. Extremely short, with no extra modes.

Score: 6/10

Will wait for it to go on sale.
