If it's a game I really don't want to get spoilers for, or that has an online component, those are other good reasons to play at release. Plus just not wanting to wait to play something I'm excited to play!
Those are definitely appealing points for getting a game at or near launch and factors into why I get some games, but I just hate the idea of having to pay extra for this especially when a lot of games will collapse in price after a few weeks or months. It doesn't seem worth it a lot of the time. I might not even end up liking the game that much, and it's a luxury I can't afford too often.
In fact it's partly why I like game forums because there is also a lot of discussion on older games, and we have stuff like GRplayed where we'll choose a game that's fairly accessible to play together and talk about.
