I was flicking through radio stations earlier and noticed Radio X Classic Rock was playing Blur's "Song 2".

While I am well aware of how old that song is, it just doesn't feel like "classic rock" to me. Is classic rock just defined by age for you (if so, how many years?) or by the decade(s) it was released?

My definition would be something like mid 1960s to mid 1980s. Anything before or after that should have a different name imo. I know there's no authority in charge of genre names, I'm just interested in how other people would define it.

Blur are definitely not classic rock. Your definition sounds pretty spot on to me; Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, etc

I’d say pre-80s. After that, everything splintered into genres with their own specific names.

EDIT: Not saying all pre-80s rock is classic rock. Obviously there was punk etc. Classic rock is a catch-all for everything not otherwise defined.

I know you've made this to wind me up :capnscotty:

Era over age to me. Classic is 60s-80s (and died out in the 80s largely with the hair bands).

Agree with this. It's basically a genre/style of music in itself.

Someone i know was at work one day and he got chatting to one of the new guys who started working with him. My mate likes rock music Guns N Roses, Iron Maiden Queen, Samson, etc this guy late teens early 20's. Anyway he turned around and said to my mate he likes classic rock. I think of Classic Rock as between 60's-80's for classic bands and acts. The Who, The Rolling Stones as "classic rock" This guy turned around and said to my mate "Green Day, My Chemical Romance" as classic rock.

I agree with this. Classic is like 60s/70s then you'd say like 80s rock, 90s rock etc.

If I was just trying to wind you up, then I'd have mentioned classic rock songs like Dakota or Sex on Fire. ;)

Ignoring the merits of Nickleback as a band, I was thinking how on Earth can that song be "classic rock". It was only released a few years ago!

2006 - 17 YEARS AGO!

We are so old.

Pink and white, mint flavoured with the name of the seaside resort running through it.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

60's to 80's is classic rock, I'm currently listening to Rush's 1978 album 2112 and I'd say its very much towards the very end of the 'classic' era with the more electronic-y sounds beginning to creep in.

Nothing wrong with Kings of Leon, most of their stuff is really good. It's sexy fire I can't stand.

Yep. It was when the singer cut his hair for the 3rd album (which is a great album), then it became all about ooooo the singer is so sexy, then they released sexy fire and then it was all anyone wanted to hear. Dogshit song.
