I've just moved from a house where I got 152Mbps with Virgin to one where there are no fibre services in the area at all and the max speed I can get is 2.25Mbps download and 0.35 Mbps upload! Bah!

Seemed a bit faster so tested again.

This is using a cheap wireless dongle so I'm fairly pleased.

The Rightmove website has a feature were you can check the internet speed of a house before you even thinking about moving.

Saved me from a couple of rubbish places so far.

Unfortunately, that was the one compromise that we had to make because the house is otherwise amazing, in a beautiful area and leagues ahead of every other house we viewed. There is a chance we'll get BT Infinity in the area in a few months' time, assuming it's financially viable to upgrade the cabinet we're connected to (the exchange is scheduled for upgrade before December), and Virgin have recently moved into the 2 areas either side of us so there may be hope there too.

My old Sky one was 0.70Mbps Download

I might not bother getting a wired connection set up if I keep getting these speeds.

Just moved from BT Infinity where we were getting around 70Mb/s to Virgin with their upto 152Mb/s service.. getting pretty much full speed so quite chuffed with that.

Had to swap the powerline adaptor on the desktop pc for a USB wifi dongle withac support to get the full speed as noticed the powerline was maxing out around 70mb/s whereas my phone was showing the full speed, £25 well spent I think.

One last speed test before we move on to BT infinity's 80 down / 20 up tomorrow.

Image

I'm hoping for some big gains seeing as I pretty much max out their 20 meg copper service (yeah it says 17 meg but the router syncs at 20, theres always an overhead), I live right by the exchange.

Definitely looking forward to 20meg up. In yo face blackouthero.

39Mb/s is the best I've ever got from my so call 76Mb/s BT Infinity Fibre service. I'm moving soon to a place I can get Virgin so plan to subscribe to their 100Mb/s or 152mb/s service.

BT sorted my internet today. Should've been done on Monday but there was a problem with my line and then they cocked up my order.

Anyway, pretty happy with my speeds:

Quickest internet I've ever had and no more gooseberry fool pings to annoy me on Xbox Live. Fibre optic ye. 8-)

FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) is capable of offering up to 25Mb/s upload speeds. It just depends on how far away you are from the fibre connection, the more copper wire between you and the cabinet that has the fibre connection the lower the speed you'll get.

Of course then you've also got whatever restrictions your ISP puts on you. For instance, I've just gone with TalkTalk superfast and I'm pretty close to the fibre connection, but because I've gone with the Medium package I think I'm only down to get 2Mb/s upload speeds.

Its always nice to have a higher number, but you've got to question if you'll actually need that kind of speed. If you are just online gaming then I think its pretty much pointless. Obviously if you are uploading large videos or hosting some kind of server you want access to when you are away then you might want higher speeds.

EDIT - In fact for gaming your ping is probably far more important than having higher upload speeds than you do.

1gb broadband has just landed in drogheda (at no additional cost if you on fibre), which is 5mins up the road from me, Irish government want a national average of 2gb in 5 years with 5gb in the city!

Having the worlds technological company's certainly has its ups as we're already in top 10 countries in the world for average BBspeed. I've 90 down and 20 up myself.
