 What a world.

Depends on the type of novel, really. Some are considerably more girly than others. If he's reading Mills And Boon, then we have a problem.

Whoooooosh.

Indeed. There are 2 types of books you can buy in supermarkets; cliched shite by people who want to be Jeremy Clarkson and cliched shite to empower the new woman, normally concerning child abuse, spinsters or slice of life toss. Both are an instant turn off.

Who said anything about supermarkets? Give me a good science fiction/fantasy novel, preferably by Douglas Adams (despite the fact I've read all his books now) or something similar.

When I think Mills and Boon, or the modern equivalents, I think supermarket fiction. Most have a champagne glass on the cover, and are about busy buisnesswomen from the big city winding down by strawberry floating as many men as possible, just before meeting up to discuss strawberry floating as men as possible with their also slutty friends. Why would anyone ever want to read that shite?

I detest most science fiction I've read, but adore Douglas Adams. The 1st Dirk Gently is one of the best books I've ever read. The part with the horse in the bathroom always cracks me up.

Grhh. Manly, and such.

Aye, Douglas Adams is (was) a wonderful author, and he has (had) a great way with words and imagination. Have you read "Last Chance To See"?

Yeah, it's fantastic. I love Cryptozoology and any strange creatures, so the chapter on Madagascar (sp) was great fun to read. I still haven't finished the Hitchhiker series, but aim to so I can read the 6th at Christmas.

Now he was manly.

Oh yeah, I know nothing about how cars work. Which is okay if you're a lady because (let's be honest) mechanics expect it and you can always put on a flirty voice or something to get them to do your bidding. I feel like such a man failure when somebody asks what's wrong with my car and all I can suggest is that it was working, then it wasn't.

I know how cars, helicopters and planes work, as well as household wiring installations. Does this make me a man?

In our society that is obsessed with forcing people to conform to very strict gender stereotypes, yes. Yes it does.
