Also this gen started later than expected as many predicted it would be have started in 2010-11, as opposed to 2013.

Like most of the people on here, I'm guessing Ninty will be the first to release a new console.

I think we'll see a long generation. The only real reason it would be shorter would be if VR really took off.

I think the real reason this gen has been disappointing is that we re into diminishing returns where more power doesn't make things look that much better. Also there is an unwillingness to throw more resources into game making.

I'm going for 2020 if not later maybe 2022. Another reason for the gen to end would be a marketing move with the consoles just running out of steam and Ms and Sony just wanting a big marketing push. But it's better for both of them to just let things run on.

With this generation's consoles being x86 based, I can imagine the nextgen just being more powerful versions. The new machines would be backwards compatible, and games could be produced which will run on the older consoles, but would look better on the new versions (like how PC games work).

I can't see them lasting 7-8 years this time but for me this will be the last generation of PS/Xbox consoles I will ever buy unless they nail the VR and stop releasing such generic unfinished buggy crap.As they've both been successful in terms of sales I really can't see them changing the formula much.

PC/Nintendo or a newcomer to the market with some good fun ideas will get my cash from now on.

If I bought a console it would definitely be a wii u. Seems like the best option to supplement my pc.

Honestly? I'll be genuinely surprised if Nintendo doesn't announce *something* by the end of 2016, and I wouldn't be too surprised if Microsoft cut their losses and released a new machine before the end of 2018. Sony will probably wait until 2020 before releasing new hardware.

Hopefully not very long. The PS4 and Xbox One are woefully underpowered and this will be pretty apparently to all in a couple of years.

The current generation of consoles are not powerful enough to generate any meaningful improvement to games over the previous one so I want it to be as short as possible in order to bring in new hardware.

The power is just being used in the wrong way. Blaming the apparent lack of power for developers lack of creativity is a new take on it. What improvements to games do you want? Looking at the driving genre for instance, 60fps is possible in any game, they could have 50 cars on the track, if the necessity was gameplay that would come first and the visuals second, hence F-Zero X.

Yeah but Nick, PC games looked that good 10 years ago.

Care to share some PC games from 2004 with faces that look as good as Uncharted 4?

Ridiculous statement.

They both look like cutscenes anyway, and not in game gifs.

Half Life 2 was 2004. It felt like a big step forward but wasn't that massive. I personally don't think graphics are that important. Gamers get to caught up on things like 60fps and 1080p. I doubt many causal gamers care.

The gap between PC and consoles was huge in the past. Look at quake 2 vs golden eye. What really matters is convenience.

I also get the impression it's going to be a short generation, with Microsoft doing a '360' and releasing a machine that was much more powerful than the previous generation, kicking the next one into being and stealing significant market share in the process. I think they will have learnt their lessons from this generation's launch and go 'all in', loss leading heavily at the start by making a substantially more powerful machine, to steal a technological and competitive advantage on their competitors.

If the iPhone / iPad cycle is anything to go by, it proves that there is certainly a significant percentage of the market that are just happy to make sure they have the most cutting edge of technology. Also remember that, with previous generation's sales still strong, this generation was by far the most successful new generation there has been. Given how, relatively speaking, the new consoles aren't as cutting edge as the previous 360/PS3 cycle, I feel there is certainly the appetite for a new, significantly earlier launch of consoles.
