Reminds me of one of my first temp jobs in the clarks distribution centre. They had these big trolleys to load the shoe boxes on and then you'd tag them with coloured labels to tell the people sorting them which track they should be put on. The colours were blue, white, yellow, green and red. Except the guy I was paired up with insisted the red was actually salmon pink  It was red, but no, he had to call it salmon pink every single time.

Yellow please.
Yellow.

Blue please.
Blue.

Red please.
...
Red please.
....you mean salmon pink?

The world would be better if Pantone was open source and embedded in everyone's brains at birth. 100%.

I still don't understand how you can trademark a colour.

It's not so much the colours that are trademarked, but the system and the names sometimes are.

What was really annoying was Pantone revoking licensing for the Adobe suite so since a few versions ago, you don't have any Pantone colour books in any of the apps (which were there for decades) unless you pay Pantone a ridiculous subscription fee for a plug-in.

They're just colour values FFS. It's easy enough to export and re-import them older versions, but no new ones will be added.

My books are from the mid 00s anyway. I'll copy the LAB values from some online source for new ones but it does make it difficult to make an exact match without a physical reference. None of my clients are that anal about it.

Debating colour names/values is a colossal waste of time, it's one of the worst fallacies ever in plagues graphic design. Naming and perceiving colours is both subjective and physically extremely variable, unless everyone is using an identical process and calibrating everything, everywhere, in a way that never changes. Bloody nightmare. Fortunately these days most screens are capable of representing a good amount of the sRGB colour space, which is still quite small, but you'll always get someone who wants to strawberry float with everything by pushing colours into borderline florescent, extreme luminosity, never thinking if that can actually be reproduced in the real world besides what they see in their one laptop/phone or some other device.
