Got a website for my portfolio, currently paying no more than £6 for the web domain and around £65 for web hosting from Go Daddy. Does this sound reasonable?

Just a heads-up that GoDaddy are well-known for being an awful awful company -- atrocious business practices, horrible customer service, run by evil people.

£6/year for a domain is fine. £65/year for hosting is a bit on the pricey side for just hosting one portfolio site, I think £30-40 would be more reasonable.

I used gandi.net for my web hosting.

The place I work at started out as a web hosting company, but we're scrapping that side of the business from next month.

We charged £5 per month for hosting, which includes a free domain, 5GB of storage, email, databases and 24/7 UK support.

So that works out at £60 a year and we were'n't really making any profit on that.

That pricing lines up with what you'd pay at someone like Squarespace.

Go daddy are awful. The price is awful.

Use the UK company Tsohost with amazing support. Tsohost.com

They will migrate your site for you for free.

I've set up multiple companies/clients on them and rarely if ever had a problem and when something like downtime happens (once it was emails) it is fully explained and detailed and fixed in hours.

They respond to tickets in minutes even in the middle of the night.

I ran my company on 14.99 a year, if you aren't dumb with your big uncompressed video and JPEG uploads 500 Meg is fine. The infrastructure is really really fast and the control panel is excellent. It is easy to upgrade.

I only moved to 2.99 a month because I now host a client as well so that's £36 a year - almost half of what you're paying for a horrible US company that doesn't deserve a fraction of the clients it has.

In short, I'm glad you asked.
