Don't worry about using ideas based on familiar IPs, it's usually how the best stuff comes about.

Also, I've found that it's easy to let your writing flow and have it make sense still, just by keeping a firm idea of certain plot points in mind.
For example, create a simple timeline and dot the important stuff down on there, which will leave plenty of room in between those points to let your imagination run riot.

It's definitely worth keeping separate drafts of your work, too. Save each chapter as a separate file, so you can always go back if you decide you don't like something - yet still keep the chapters you don't like, in case there are some ideas in there that you can use later on.

Good idea about saving chapters seperately.

Im intending to start writing tonight, I always get my best ideas when its dark.

Yo Falsey, have you considered writing a short story about kinda the 'core' of your idea? A lot of great writers got started that way.

I've started several shorts based around characters from my book, though I have struggled to finish them - I gotta stop writing more than one at a time! :oops:
